Never seen the like before, but it could be a pump rather than an engine.

The walls of the cylinder are 1/4 inch thick, and it is sleeved. Its oscillating, I don't think there are any oscillating pumps.
In toy steam there are lots of oscillating pumps, and also some dental vacuum pumps were oscillators if memory serves.
Don’t recognize it... what part of the world are you from? Maybe that will help... and Welcome to the forum!!
I'm in Oregon. Bought this on eBay, it shipped from Kentucky. Plan on making it a running engine.

I'd be scared to have a ~3 lb. oscillating cylinder on any dental equipment, it'd be an earthquake machine.
Properly balanced the actual weight of the mechanism is of no significance. There are oscillating cylinder engines of many tons that run smooth as silk.
Anybody know how this is supposed to be mounted to something, the hole for the pivot is bare with no threads, and even goes all the way through in the center.
