"Buffalo-Springfield" steam roller--1st test on steam
« on: April 09, 2025, 10:15:53 am »
First test on steam of this new (to me) 1 1/2-inch scale "Buffalo-Springfield"-like steam roller using a ceramic burner. The roller was built from scratch by Frank Luecke based on plans published in Live Steam magazine. Although originally coal-fired, I'm planning on hiding a Forest-Classics butane tank inside the water reservoir and will make a better video later. Looks like it will have no problem pulling its own weight.

Major Congratulations!

That beauty is full on Spectacular!!!

I'd certainly want to find the source of that Bong-bang-chunk rhythmic noise that seems in sequence with the gear ring rotation on the roller.

Thanks. It's gear noise amplified by the phone's camera. Is really mild and I kinda like it.

A wonderful beast Brent.

It's great to see it running.

As I mentioned to you when we spoke, I have seen 4 or 5 of these offered on eBay and not one of them had been completed.

The real question is: will it pull you behind it?  ;D

Thanks Charlie. I think even if it has the power it won't have the traction to pull anyone.

marvelous Brent, I have always liked these steam rollers & have had a chance on buying one a time or two, but as you have said "they are rarely complete"

Thanks Bruce.I got lucky on this one as the builder/former owner finished it and ran it on coal. It had been sitting for many years so I took it apart, got the pistons unstuck and did some cosmetic work with a few additions like the ship's wheel, chimney final, and whistle. Let's see how it runs on its own once I get the fuel tank.

I think I'll be able to outrun it--geared down to run slowly.

What an awesome piece Brent!! You sure know how to find them!! I’ve only seen 2 running other than yours (both on air) one at a local show and one at NAMES. while gas is easier and far more convenient, I would have a hard time changing that one over from coal!

Thanks Nick. This one found me--a local RR museum was "deaccessioning" (selling) it. I would have never seen it but a friend let me know about it; was never advertisedx. I don't want to fool with coal, but everything I do to make it run on gas will be reversible.
