Crushing Plant Model - Albert A. Hopkins, circa 1870s
Summary
Model of a stamp battery wth steam engine and amalgamator made by Albert A. Hopkins whilst serving his apprenticeship in the Union Foundry, Ballarat. The model was displayed at the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880 by J. R. Hopkins in class 81 Apparatus and Processes of the Art of Mining and Metallurgy.
Physical Description
Steam engine connected to a piston driving a wheel which winds the gears to drive the crushing mechanism of the model. There are feed trays at the back and trays at the front to catch the crushed material. A mill in the front is also powered by the battery. All attached to a square board.

Is it reasonable to assume that it is a working model, or at least was back in its day?

That one is really splendid and might well be worth emulating today!
