Displacement lubricator size nice for Wilesco?
« on: February 09, 2021, 04:46:04 pm »
Wondering as I am replumb a Wileso sized engine if there is a displacement or hydrostatic lubricator that would not look huge on a Wilesco engine?
I know I can easily just stop the engine every few min and add a couple drops but the displacement lubricator does ad visual interest and it "seems" like a continuous trickle is better than a Glob every few min?
I am aware of the PMR unit...I thought the small one may still look big.
Found this guy put a more slender unit on Wileso mobile but no sight Glass...I may be asking to much for tiny Plus sight Glass? Thought it would be nice to have a visual on rate of usage and when low on oil?
I guess I am not stuck on displacement style if there is another attractive type?

Don't know if this link will work...

If you think you have the skills to machine an engine out of castings, making a displacement lubricator should be a piece of cake for you.

Jim...you may be right...lol...I machine brass all the time, however I almost never work with glass. The first pic is one I like but no sight window...second pic then second lubricator in from left has impressive widow but to large for Wilesco. I will have to give o-ring placement some thought for best glass seal. End of tube both ends seems most logical but I have not seen one dissassembled yet....

However, I have learned some years ago, just because you CAN...Does not mean you Should!...we all have a finite amount of free time and and sometime purchase of an product that Craftman have refined to high level IS the prefured method. I call it "choose your battles"

This would possibly be an easy design to shrink down and offers Max oil level viewing...not very "olde timey" steam looks though, possibly could be Dolled up.

This is a bit more the look I would like! This is a Sediment glass bowl from old tractor.
To re-create this in Wilesco size I was thinking select a high grade of glass test tube the dia you want your resevour...cut maybe the bottom 20mm or to liking of the test tube off and you have a deep bowl...wet sand the cut edge on glass or granite surface plate till smooth and square.
Machine the top from brass to pleasing shape and plumb steam thru.
Machine a o-ring groove in top to accept small o-ring.
What I like about this design is no post up center and old time look.
The bottom knurl nut I would make from brass and touch a ball nose end mill to match the rounded bottom of the test tube to distribute the tighten force...an o-ring or pc of leather could also be inserted for cushion.
The most difficult part would be the curved pc that hangs down to carry the bottom thread.
At the beginning of a steam run you would loosen the bottom nut few turns and slide out test tube, dump condenced water and rinse for clear view...fill with favorite steam oil.
I would leave stock Wileso oiler on steam chest and plumb this in close to steam chest...this way you could add a couple drops in the stock oiler so no dry start...them a few min in hopefully the displacement oiler is flowing nicely with front row viewing of oil/condensed water. Only one o-ring in this design easily replaced.

I was thinking making the test tube "bowl" 2-3 times deeper than photo in perportion to dia of test tube selected.
