DIY Steam Turbine
« on: December 02, 2020, 06:08:35 pm »
Seeing pics and videos of steam turbines lately, gave me the thought of making one about 2 weeks ago. Took a lot longer than I thought and some challenges to overcome, but pretty happy with it.

General consensus of family members who have been around when I've done some testing at different stages of the build has been "what the hell have you got running in the shed and hope you're wearing ear protection".

On air 20 psi starts to really get going, 40 psi starts to REALLY get going and making a sound like a 747 jumbo gunning the jets, 60 psi is pretty ear piercing (and scary speeds) and sound like a military fighter jet :)

No, didn't even think to take any when building it.

Axle is running on bearings with a hefty 1" internal brass wheel with silver brazed thick copper sheet fan blades inserted into cuts on the brass wheel.

😂😂

Haha, hope you’ve built it well if running it at 60 psi  :D

Gave dad a fidget spinner for Christmas as a joke last year. We took it down to the basement and shot some air through it... well, it started smoking, then pieces went flying everywhere  :D

Had it as 120 psi for a short while before the compressor lost that amount of pressure just to double check and proof the brazing would hold the fan blades.

Yeah....I admit it scared me just a little  8)

No, worst than a thunder storm for the Blue Heeler, the little girl doesn't care at all about it.

Thanks Bruce, I should have taken some pics when I was building, but just got to immersed in it.
