eBay Sales Tax??
« on: July 16, 2019, 02:04:46 pm »
eBay and other online sales sites started charging me sales tax for my purchases. Do you think this will impact the US economy moving forward, and may drive it to depression?

I started getting hit by this a month or two back... not really happy about paying sales tax on an old/used toy, but eBay still remains the best option for finding and buying pieces missing from the collection. Same with antique shops, they used to always cut you a deal on price or not charge tax if you paid cash, but not anymore... I now use a credit card 99% of the time in antique shops so I can get 2-3% back.

Forgot to mention Amazon has added sales tax as well, and I don't think their sales are anywhere near slowing down...

I guess the folks that will be hardest hit besides consumers is the smaller and independent businesses, not big sellers like Amazon whom i doubt it would make much difference and as  Nick says hasn't slowed down their sales. I know the internet sales tax has disrupted my friends business whilst they try to figure it all out.

Some states (e.g., NY and NJ) require individuals to track and pay sales taxes for online purchases where tax was not collected by the vendor. NY/NJ each had an alternate calculation to estimate the tax, which I'm sure was far lower than what should have been paid but made the math easy. This past year NJ eliminated that alternative, so we now have to keep track of everything. Still easy math, but it's a lot more $.  :-\

I don't think eBay or Amazon collecting tax is going to drive the US economy into a depression. I don't like it one little bit, but the way I see it as we've been lucky up till now...just be glad they don't throw a VAT tax on top of it as well. IMHO this forums "sale" thread is
woefully underutilized from buyers and sellers.

Yes VAT would be a killer and I would be in deep if they back-dated it!!!  :o

As you say buying and selling on the forum is the most pleasurable option, just that eBay helps find some real rarities.

Yes Nick, I doubt we ever get away from E-bay entirely, but it does open the door more to Craigslist & the like.

I still wonder how some of these older collectors amassed some of the most impressive collections pre-internet  :o

I think there are a lot of people monitoring facebook marketplace as anything that isn't way over-priced is gone within the hour. How long before those transactions or the messages between buyer/seller are monitored and charged some kind of fee? I'm very surprised Craigslist is still free to post ads on.

Nick what is Facebook marketplace?

A buy/sell site attached to facebook, used far more often than craigslist and about the only reason I finally created a facebook account  :D

I hate selling on it though as only about 1/4 of the buyers actually show up... the people on there are far less reliable than on craigslist...
