HELP! It won't run. 1/8 scale rider ericsson
« on: March 18, 2019, 07:23:23 am »
I'm not surprised that my "great deal" ebay purchase doesn't run, and for the price i paid i don't mind if it ends up a shelf queen. Still, i would like to know what i am missing as to why it won't run.
Here is what i know or have tried/checked so far
with the displacer rod removed from the center hole in the piston, the piston drops smoothly and quickly through the cylinder
with the displacer installed and the displacer rod through the center of the piston, the piston drops smoothly but slowly through the cylinder. If you pull up on the cylinder at this point it "springs" back, indicating good suction, or no leaks
There are no cracks or leaks in the cylinder, even after heated up
no cracks or leaks in the displacer
There seems to be no adjustment for timing, as it is predetermined by the various non-adjustable linkages
I am going to try a heavier flywheel, then try to get a copy of the bluprints from myers castings. My thinking now is that there is something not right with the displacer or the linkages lengths may be off.
Any help from others who have had to get one of these working would be appreciated.

Clearances are all with these. Your displacer may be too small for its bore or the displacer gland may be leaking. The gasket that isolates the displacer may be leaking, and there are probably other places you can check.

As for timing, you should be able to set the crank throws 90 degrees apart (either way; this just affects the direction of rotation).

And now, having dispensed all this sage advice, I must admit that I have never gotten my Moriya fan to run properly.🤔

Other than air leaks try adjusting the displacor position
When adjusted correctly it should just not touch the power piston
The displacors rod should have a lock nut at the top bearing of the bow shaped thingy ma bob this should allow for a bit of adjustment
Not sure about the 1/8 model but on the 1/4 the displacor is fixed to the rod by a grub screw
Be careful running it without cooling as the liner is glued into the water jacket and if it gets to hot the glue breaks down and you end up with a water leak into the hot cap
Dont ask how I found that one out
The timing is set by the linkage the triangular thingy ma bob that the bow couples onto as long as the pins are at 90 it should be correct
Iv nearly finished a 1/4 one from some castings from David just needs painting but did have some problems with clearances as drawn also on the drawing the fits are pretty sloppy to say the least
Moriya is a great design although I lost my one as part of a swap for the 1/4 scale castings will have to make another soon

cheers

Thanks,
adjusting the displacer position was something i was never quite sure about. I will check that this evening

If the pump is connected try running it with it disconnected as it may be causing to much friction
I would use the disconnected pump to manually to fill the water jacket first.
Another simpler problem maybe to much dead space. I would remove the hot cap and measure the distance from the bottom of the displacer to the engines bed plate and check the depth of the hot cap you only going to need a couple of mill space
The engines ratio should be around1.5:1
