Help A Brother Out (Actually My Brother) Weeden Sight Fitting
« on: October 15, 2023, 06:09:12 pm »
Hi all -

My brother has had this Weeden for a while now and has asked if anyone could help him with the lower sight fitting.  As you can tell from the photo the bottom is missing and the whole plugged.  He would even accept something that was made and would fit the bottom to put in a sight glass.

Also, anything interesting to know about this Weeden - I am guessing it is a bit old.  Seem pretty heavy duty to me.

Silly me, a little Googling and a email to weedensteam.com gets me the model, its a Weeden No. 60.  The site, ran by a fellow named Frank, has parts for the sight glass though not the correct shape.  But perhaps we can build up the lower fitting to get a glass tube in while looking for a donor (or someone here has spares!).

Nice little Weeden site and I can even get a No. 14 Burner from him.

Might as well show off what I think are other Weedens that are on my brother's shelf, there is a boat (sadly needs boiler replacement) and a cool Steamroller.  I am pretty sure that's a Weenden engine right next to the #60.  These engines all just fell into my brother's lap from his long time friend that passed away last year.

When my brother was a "tween" (he is 47 now) and rolling around on his bike he randomly met a older fellow in his front yard.  I think something cool caught my brother's eye and asked about it.  Which that is how my brother rolls, he'll talk to anyone for just about any reason (especially if you have something that looks old).  Anyways they became fast friends and a large amount of items the older fellow collected ended up with my brother.  Which is how I ended up here asking about Empires a little over a year ago.  I wished I could remember the old guys name but he was in his 80s when he passed.

Funny how a chance meeting changes things and touches others lives.  Like me bugging you all here for the last year LOL!

Rich. That looks like a Weeden no. 14 next to the no. 60.

Rich. That looks like a Weeden no. 14 next to the no. 60.
And with a green base at that.  :)

is that a good thing, having a green base?!?  I think you are the fellow that helped me a few days ago for some parts!  Which for the record, Thank you!

@Weedensteam -

Is there enough there on the piston to put a repo Governor Base on?  Also a photo of the front (or at least I assume this is the front!).

That is an old and rare No.14, yes it is a good thing! Yeh it is me you ordered the parts from, they are in the mail. Unfortunately it looks like the dovetail had broken off the cylinder so not easy to attach a governor base.

I believe that the green based Weeden 14's are far less common and perhaps represent an earlier model.

Frank will probably chime back in here with the definitive answer.

Might there be a date range for it?

Perhaps @Weedensteam will come back and comment if it is possible to put a repo Governor Base on...

My best guestimate would put it right around the turn of the century, but it is a bit tricky as they did paint some green at a much later date, so then it would depend on what features it actually possess as well as the green painted base.

The boiler, whistle and lever safety valve with the darker green base would make it an early one, Daniels reckoning is a close as I could get to date.

Thanks guys for your input, I'll pass it along to my brother as 189x~190x

Looks like I over-read this statement from Frank:
"Unfortunately it looks like the dovetail had broken off the cylinder so not easy to attach a governor base."

What a bummer - I have to say that cylinder seems in rough shape all around.

Here is some new photos - let me know your thoughts.  There is one showing pegs for the piston (not screws), the piston has a simply brass cross mount and other angle photos.

The burner that my brother has, might it be correct for this engine?
