How to remove flywheel from Mamod Steam Wagon
« on: July 12, 2019, 09:37:56 am »
I have removed the piston assembly from my SW1 for cleaning purposes and am having a hell of a job getting it back on. The problem is the small screw and that spring is making it very difficult. It might be easier if I remove the crank and flywheel but how to remove it? Someone said that I will have to draw it off with a flywheel puller? It isn't one with a grub-screw which would have been easier. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

No need to dismantle the crank at all. In fact that is the worse thing you could do as the fywheel is a press fit and drawing it off, and it will come off without a puller, can mean that it may not be a tight fit when put back so it becomes a loctite job.

Try this. Remove piston from cylinder. Put spring on the screw and push through hole hard so spring is well compressed. THis will give you plenty of exposed thread so screw on the cylinder just a couple of turns. Replace piston and fit over the crank pin. It will be easiest if you turn the crank round so that the pin on the carank is as far away from the cylinder as possible . This means the least amount of strain on the bolt and spring. Then hand tighten the hex bolt as required once all sitting nicely in place.

Hope this helps.

Pick up a nut driver, or a socket if you have a 1/4" drive set, makes life much easier.

Thank you, thank you. Did that and it went back with no problems. Does the screw need to be screwed in as far as it will go?

Brian

That is good news.

I tighten mine up by hand until the piston turns over nicely - you should  not need to tighten fully up . If you have to then the spring may be a bit weak in which case replace it or just stretch it a bit and refit.

I usually fine tune mine by getting steam up and adjusting to get the smoothest running.

Try it and see how you get on. You will soon get the hang of it.

As Stuart said, not all the way and it takes some fine tuning, BUT if you don't go tight enough the spring and screw will work loose and go flying across the room  :D

Thanks everyone, will do as you suggest. This is all new to me so I need (and will) listen to advice. Just noticed that the Steam Roller I have just received via eBay does have a grub-screw on the flywheel.
