Jensen Mystery, Jensen History
« on: July 02, 2019, 09:56:55 am »
I wonder if the electrically driven pump set which Gil has most fortuitously won recently from Aussie eBay, should be graced with a sobriquet reflecting the true source of his wonderful good fortune?

Seeing as the entire saga of its discovery, identification and spread of information about this seminal piece of obscure Jensen History is well and truly all attributable to our good friend Jim, it would only seem fitting to attach his name in some conspicuous fashion to this most fortuitous of finds!

Original discovery thread as seen here:

https://www.officeofsteamforum.com/ebay/looks-very-'jensenish'/

Perhaps Jim's Jensen Juggernaut would be apropos, or maybe Jim's Jensen Mystery Pump, or even Jim's Down Under Jensen History Mystery.

I guess I'm really not very good at coming up with such names myself, but what I do know is that the Jensen history that is going to unfold for us from this fortuitous discovery, is all because Jim happened upon something unusual, had the keen eye to recognize similarities and the sharing spirit to post about it here on the Forum, so that it could be viewed and reviewed until it became obvious what was actually on offer.

In all ways that I can think of, this is truly Jim's Discovery, and thus it should most certainly be somehow recognized as Jim's signal discovery and contribution!

There are many other ways that I could relate, in which Jim was involved to the benefit of others in this deal, but suffice it to say it was all done with the most humble expressions of true generosity, which is a conspicuous hallmark of the man!

While I have already thanked Jim privately, I am most pleased to offer my thanks quite publicly right here.
Jim, you are a true gentleman, a great friend, and a terrific fellow steam engine collector.

Without further explanation, I'd like to also thank Daniel publicly.

I will differ on the idea that this event is fortuitous. I believe it simply happened not by accident but by the diligent never ending search that many of us are committed to. This time it was Jim's most persistent searching and his keen eye that coughed up this unusual piece of Jensen history.

While I never knew the piece would look exactly like this when found, I did know it would have a Jensen #50 cylinder assembly because that is the only Jensen piece that measures up correctly for the cast aluminum base.... which I happen to have one of. I knew it came from Tom Sr. but had no idea what it was in completed form.

Thanks again, Jim...!!!

Thanks again, Daniel...!!!

This base is pictured below.

If you look carefully at this base, you will note that all the holes are drilled, tapped, and located precisely as are required for making the same set up on my empty base. This base came from Tom Sr.'s good friend Randy Calhoun.

I'm super excited for Gil to get this and take some detailed photos for us. The eBay listing was really just a tease! What a wonderful piece of Jensencania.

Daniel, I love reading your words when you get get it on like above! Wonderful stuff, reminds me of western/cowboy literature.

I had to go back & look at the original listing...Yup that base is a match alright, so Gil you knew something like this existed before, extremely interesting. this does just keep getting better & better. I would have loved to pursue it....but I'm confident it fell into the exact right hands, good on everyone involved...all the way around. & I also thinks Danial has a flourish for words that is not easily replicated & comes from a lifetime of world travel & experience.
