Märklin 4150 D 5 1/2 rescued from scrap press
« on: August 06, 2020, 02:58:33 pm »
Just bought this rare Sculpture of a Märklin steam engine for US$ 40.00
Some may think I am crazy! Shall I keep it as it is or make a restoration?
Some of the parts are reusable as spares. I just d'not know.....
The burner is already in working order!

Overall the engine is .... not very encouraging, but you got your money's worth with the burner alone, and I see several individual parts that look quite salvageable. On the other hand, there is nothing so bad that it can't be fixed, it is only a question of how far you are willing to go to fix it, what all can you actually source for it, will it be worth it, and how much of it will end up really being original.

Often in a case like this it is far easier to build a whole new engine from scratch!

Looks all right to me. Is there something wrong with it?

Great work of....metal smooshiness.  A keeper
photo.  Would love as much of a backstory as
possible.  Makes me think of the old-style
junkyards I spent time in when I needed
used parts for my very used cars.  Learned to
watch out for bees in the old cars the hard way!

But, I would have paid the selling price in
a heartbeat - hours of daydreaming ahead
and lots of surprises.  No parting out.

Have fun,
Wayne

Whoa, that's wild. It looks like something I would buy for too much money. You've dad got some good parts left if you can get them off...but that would almost ruin it. I like it as is, with a good story to go with

Its appearance makes me sad.
If I had the storage space... And the money... I'd have a few more engines.

Well with my limited ability i would attempt a ressurection not a restoration.
I would enjoy the challenge of getting it to run again
Nothing is impossible.

Good luck

I decided to make restoration of the steam engine - but the Boiler and Platform made no sense to rebuild.
After disassembling I start with building a new Piston and Cylinder Cover from Bronze, Connecting Rod from Brass, Crankshaft
from Precision Steel. The slide rod then was soldered with Silver solder - that one was badly twisted and
broken apart. The molded platform was broken into 4 sections - I used s special metal 2 components glue
to fix it. The Regulator was only bend and could be straightened same as the Feed Water Pump and Steam pipe.
The Boiler used is from a Märklin 4058 Steamplant - unfortunately all Fittings were missing and the front cover was leaky
(overheated without water?) -After soldering I started to make all new Fittings according Märklin - Photos from Brass.
Also the complete chimney had to be rebuild. Yes, I have a workshop with a lathe and Milling machine!
All is then arranged on a wooden (oak) platform with a blued steel Border - and she runs again hopefully for the next 100 years....
enjoy the reborn 4058/4150 Märklin Steamplant! Happy steaming

Have placed a small video running the engine with a Bing Drill
Enjoy - and sorry for the poor movie quality...
