Empire 90 (30, 32, 43, & 62) Directions
« on: November 24, 2024, 08:09:20 am »
A bit ago I got Empire 90 and it came with some directions I haven't seen before.  I have other directions but they are hanging tags with a string.  This one is a little sheet that also covers Empire No. 30, 32, 43, & 62 engines.

The engine itself is in pretty darn condition and can't tell if someone started a restore.  If they did, their paint skills and color selection is superb.  The engine was missing its top steam color seal, one screw for the tank to the base.  Also, where I normal see copper rivet on the tank's sub-base there are copper screws.  The worse bits are that the bottom tank's sight glass fitting is a bit stripped and the power's connector was been cut off the cord.  The cord is in okay shape, I just need transplant a connector onto it.

Anyone seen these Empire directions?  Perhaps Charlie / @txlabman.

Thanks for sharing the instructions! As much as I love nickel plating, these bare copper Empire boilers sure are nice looking  8)

I got the plug sorted out but it pushes out water as much as it does steam, I fiddled with it a bit but I guess it will be shelf queen - can't seem to get it to run.

Nice catch, especially the instruction sheet.

The unplated copper boilers look really nice
and I'm a sucker for these Empire No.92 Play Boy
engines.  One has no sightglass/fittings and the
sight glass holes are bored over-sized - but the
engine does run.  I've had 4 and the heaters were
cooked on two.  I have one whose heater is good
and runs well and another with a replacement
heater that runs well IF I liberally apply steam
oil to the cylinder and piston.  Keep in mind,
the boiler is rather small and you will not get
a long run-time.  To maximize, use a voltage
reducer like a variac or an incandescent bulb
dimmer.  I've added a video.

As to your problem.  Is the water coming out
of the back of the cylinder, or is it coming from
the cylinder/valve-plate area?  The latter might
just need tightening.  The former, well, the engine
I use the steam oil on has a different cylinder and
the piston is removable, allowing me to do a good
oiling.  Yours looks like a different cylinder with
a non-removable piston.  Try steam oil on the rod
and cylinder end and maybe enough will get in to help.
Don't give up hope.  You will beat it into submission!
The working heater is a good start.

God Luck,
Wayne

I just got it running, it was the steam pipe needed one more turn towards the piston :-)

@komet163b / Wayne - I think it was the pipe not being screwed enough in and I think I might have overfilled it the 1st time too.  I agree, the copper Empires are really nice.

Thanks Rich, for sharing this instruction sheet!

Always good to have extra reference material like this spread around the "community"!!!
