Connecting Displacement Oilers

Hi,

These two styles of displacement oilers seem to be for sale everywhere.  Problem is I don't understand how to connect them inline between the boiler and the piston.  Please refer to the attachments.

"Style A" only has a threaded fitting on one end.  The other end is just a hole.  How do I connect a steam line to the non-threaded end?

"Style B" has some sort of cap with a twist handle on one end (not the top cap where you fill it).  Don't displacement oilers work by flowing the steam past it reservoir?  How does the steam flow through this oiler if there is only one steam fitting?  What is the cap on the other end used for?  Is this some sort of suction arrangement?

I'd like to fit these on various engines but I am totally baffled.  Please help.

The top picture shows a "Dead Leg" oiler which is intended to "T" onto your steam line.

The lower photo shows a "Flow Through" oiler which is meant to be included as an inline part of your steam line.

In reality, they both work about the same, as the primary function is to allow condensate (water) to displace oil upwardly in each oiler, that then flows out into the steam line and with the flow of steam to the cylinder/piston provides the desired lubrication of the moving parts inside the steam environment.

As for the blank side and the fitting side on the lower oiler, I suspect the blank side is intended to simply be soldered onto one end of the steam line, while the other side provides a screw fitting so that it can allow separation like a union joint. There are plenty of the flow through types that have threaded fittings on both sides if you'd prefer!

In Stuart steam machines world for example, the manufacture has chosen the "dead led" what I call a displacement lubricator:


Microcosm/Okmomodel or JMC in France, for example, have chosen the "flow through" ones :


To my opinion, the first option is not the best one because the RC steam valve is not lubricated.

This is why, on this example, I replaced the original "dead led" one by a "flow through" one :
