Tool Time! New Tools & Stuff For My Steam Toys Workshop
« on: February 18, 2020, 06:12:29 pm »
This was my first attempt to film a tool video.

Hanging out with Danny and visiting with a number of Forum Members on our Epic Road Trip, I got some great tips on Tools & Stuff.

Nicely done, Charlie.  I've put an Amazon order in for the Jax and Dubros.

Thanks again Danny!

Thanks Scott.

The punches are awesome. 🤠

I think you mentioned that you got some of the material for making gaskets from Brent. Any tips on what to use.  Cutting up $1 bills gets old quick. 🤠

The punches are awesome.

Great video Charlie, those are the same punches I use. They are actually re-branded Boehm (French) punches. The best part about them is you can use two at a time and make a washer gasket/seal with one strike, no need to try and get the center hole "centered". Like you said, they are pricey, but I figured as many times as I'll use them that I might as well go all out and buy the biggest of both sets... they can even punch out Jensen "porthole" sight glass gaskets.

I would highly recommend this cutting pad from Amazon to save on your punches instead of using a block of wood like I previously used with my Chinese hollow punches. It doesn't seem like much for the price, but it makes clean cuts and saves on some spendy tools:

(Also, probably not necessary, but I use my 2 lb brass hammer to keep my punch handle looking new)

Thanks for the feedback Nick. I ordered the cutting pad you suggested. Plenty of other uses for it. 🤠

I think you mentioned that you got some of the material for making gaskets...

Here is the gasket material I've ordered in the past.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00068OLEC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

As the mandrels on Mayhew/Boehm punches are the same size for metric and imperial, you can mix and match cutter heads from both sets to get more size combinations.

Nice Tool buying there Charlie.
The lathe tools are definitely worth it, I have several sets here. The reason being that it is usually cheaper to buy a set than to buy replacement tips.
And your post reminded me that I need more tips, so thanks. 8)

The lathe chisels come form RCM machines in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
One of the smallest, but richest countries in Europe.
Going to RCM machines, is as going to tool heaven, 99% of what they sell are high quality tools.
Even revised steam tools and engines, high quality machinery, not that cheap stuff you can buy these days (you will not see that on their website).
And on the second floor of that shop, you can admire the owners personal steam engine collection, a real hidden treasure not many people know about.

Two additions to my Steam Toys Workshop based on feedback from the Tool Time video.

Both are for making my own gaskets.

Thanks Nick and Scott!
