This was the second day of the Coolspring engine show. Yesterday, I bought an early-model hit and miss engine, an Ervin. It was in unknown, as-is condition, but I had it running today, and hope to get a video and some pictures tomorrow.
Today, I bought this little governed steam engine. The governor is built inside the 2" diameter flywheel, and it maintains a steady rpm by changing the valve timing. It is a rather unique engine, and runs very well on steam, and the governor seems to work quite well. I have no idea as to who the maker is or the age of this engine. There are still three days of the Coolspring show, so hopefully there will be a few more finds.

Sturdy looking little thing. Can you adjust the governor to control rpm?
This is a very nice unique find Doug ,& it runs very well to boot. Good luck with your engine hunting.
That’s a neat one Doug, would like to see more testing of it when the show’s over. Fingers crossed that there will be more finds to share with us

Have fun!
Doug showed me this little engine at the show. I can attest from up close inspection, it is a true gem. Congrats, Doug!

Not far from me was a lumber mill that used a steam engine to power their equipment for many years. It too had a governor in the flywheel that would alter the valve cutoff to maintain rpm.

That is a really nice engine Doug, i like how the crosshead & cylinder is one casting.
The governor is quite a cool feature altering the cut off to control speed.
I'm guessing this was a commercial model, be interesting to know who offered the castings.
That is. very interesting.not come across anything like it before.
Some more investigation is needed i think .
Thank you
Cheers

What an interesting little engine Doug.
Another unique find Doug!
An unusual governor.
Looks like it works well.
