Weeden oiling directions?
« on: March 05, 2021, 08:07:03 pm »
Shopping on eBay and found a clean candle stick style upright Weeden, don't think I will purchase as I am looking for brass boiler BUT...seller had Weeden oiling directions! (Photo)
States in directions to oil all moving parts with 3 in 1 oil Plus add 8-10 drops in boiler water...I was thinking about this, the oil would float at top and is light oil and the steam (may) carry some oil to piston....is this the best oiling practice if you where to run an old Weeden OR is there better option? I know on like a Wilesco D5 you can slip the rod off crank and slide piston right out and lube with steam oil direct...just thought I would reach out to see how you vintage Weeden guys are handling lubrication on vintage unit?

Don't know if the directions are original, but this is the engine type in question.

I believe putting oil directly into the boilerwater, only makes some real sense when it is a tinboiler, as an attempt to form a thin oil film in there, to make them last a bit longer before rusting out.
Only have two Weedens here, both with brass boilers, and their instruction does not have the oil in the boiler recommendation.
Here they´re oiled by gently tilting the cylinder, to apply some oil inbetween that and the steamchest, a couple of drops on the pistonrod when fully extended, and a few drops sucked in via the exhaust.
Cheers

Just the info I was looking for, thank you Sir. I had not thought about the oil in boiler water helping to prevent rust on the tin boiler but it makes sense. It is actually the tin boiler that keeps me from wanting to purchase this engine, all though I must say it's in remarkable good condition, I suspect it was almost never fired or has been restored or both.
