Next week I will be getting the Booster Shot.

I never thought that would be necessary.

Hi,

My wife and I had our second vaccination early in April and about a month ago did a blood test to see if we had anti-bodies which we had.  We have just been sent another kit so we can take some blood that will be checked to see wether the anti-bodies were the result of contracting Covid or from being vaccinated.  I suspect it will be because of the vaccine as both of us are well into our 70's and neither of us have felt unwell, the chances of both of us having Covid with no symptoms I think is remote though neither of us had any reaction to either the injection or vaccine so it might be possible that we had contracted Covid and been very lucky.

Well today is infection day in England and as usual the government  is ahead of the game increasing infection statistics itself; though the water has to be tested and maybe in summer rather than winter is a better option.  Here in Wales like Scotland there is a more cautious approach, my wife and I will continue with using face masks when we see fit even after the restriction is lifted.

Take care and stay safe.

Tony.

Hey Forum Members!

My first post in this thread was on March 17th.  6 weeks later I finally returned home for a few days.

After unpacking, I spent the afternoon working on a few steam engines.  Oh, I have missed my steam cave!

We still don't have internet at the Farm House and at the Ranch House we only have a cellular Verizon Jet Pack.  So, I haven't been able to spend much time on the Forum.

I am glad to be back for a few days and I plan on making a number of videos that I planned during my 42 day Exile/Quarantine.

Everyone in the family is healthy and COVID-19 free so far.

Cheers,
Charlie

Nah ... ya just gotta use the right techniques, like tamping it down on a pile of grass clipping first, or as backing for yesterday's newspaper.

Dude ... it's duct tape, it CAN do anything when properly applied!!!    ;c)

However, there is still the question of flushability after that initial application?!?!?

Hey Nick.

My wife, youngest daughter and her fiancé arrived last night with a large Uhaul truck with the furniture for the Farm House and a month of provisions.

They finished their 14 day Quarantine period on Friday. I have been doing small projects the last couple days getting ready for the Boss to show up.

So, an exciting day today. Moving into the Farm House after 3 months of repair and remodeling.

Lots of projects still on the list.

Our plan is to stay here at least until the end of April.

I hope to have internet starting late next week. I have burned through my data plan keeping up with work. As a result, not much time online for Forums, eBay and YouTube. Signal seems strongest early in the morning.

Stay Safe, Calm and Steam On! 🤠

Nice work on the swinging garage doors Charlie (& neighbor) that door frame ought to shore up the structure a good bit as well.

The original door frame was out of square by more than 6”. The frame for the doors is actually square. It rained all day today. It will be interesting to see how bad the building leaked when I Check it tomorrow.

I finished the doors to the Garage yesterday. And one of my daughters and her boyfriend finished cleaning out the workshop attached to the garage. When we uncovered the muck on the tool bench we found that it was an early 1900s General Store Counter complete with the iron brackets for the paper roll holder. It’s still covered in a 100 years of dirt. The cleaning process on it will start later this week. I don’t know yet if it is salvageable. In any event, a neat find.

Here is a before picture of the Garage after clean out:

[attachimg=1]

And after finishing the doors. I upcycled some old corrugated metal roofing That I found in the bigger barn. . Total cost of the project was $250 for the materials plus a case of beer for my neighbor who is a great welder.

Hi,

We received this from our daughter-in-law this morning.  To two teenage daughters playing table tennis in the kitchen with their Dad must it seem a little slow.  They live in the country and have horses so they have to go out mornings and evenings.  Now each loose box has its own sets of named tools our son says the named wheel barrows look when lined up like private owner coal wagons.

Take care and stay healthy Tony.

Thanks everyone!

The internet seems to be better at night.

Update from today:

We hung the gates on the front pipe fence yesterday. I had been waiting for it to settle for a couple weeks. And I cleaned out 50+ years of junk and filth from the detatched Garage.

Today, we will make doors for the old garage. I bought the steel tubing by phone and it was delivered yesterday. I am recycling old corrugated steel from the property for the sheathing. Amazing what a redneck can do with a welder. 🤠

I will try to post some more pictures later today.

Well if your government hands the same tactics as they do here, you don't have to worrier, all famers are supplied with what ever animal and seed products they need…

Our government gives farmers nothing.
We stand on our own two feet.
The trucks are still running so our ordered feed arrived .
So like I sad, farmers supplies are still coming through and products like milk etc. picked up, don't see any difference…
I didn't say that they got their supplies for free, costs are still the same…

Well the  crap hit the fan today
And 48 hours time the fan will increase in speed .
School holidays brought forward 2 weeks
All non essential services and business to close .
In 48 hours total lock down for all non essential business and travel.
Super markets and medical  and petrol stations ,  vets and mail delivery
Will still be working.
And obviously us farmers still work.
This lock down is for at least 4 weeks .
My biggest concern is we are also in a drought with feed shortages
We are supposed to have trucks coming in the next couple of weeks .
Not sure  how this will pan out

I am going to try to take a Sunrise picture each day.

We did a family “virtual happy hour” at 5pm yesterday which definitely raised everyone’s spirits.

Along with the sunrise pics, I would love to see some pictures of everything that you have going on at your ranch Charlie  ;)

It sure is great to have FaceTime in these times... I know it helps my mom and grandpa to see and talk to the kids.

Virtual Happy Hour sounds like a great time  :D

By the way, I have seen posts on both Facebook and SmokStak about "virtual tractor shows" since many spring shows are already being cancelled, and they mentioned that they seen it done on toy steam forums  ;D

Well down here in New Zealand
Life goes on for me as being a Rural Farmer animals need to be fed and milked
My biggest concern is the two walking biological warfare agents ( daughters at High school)
Only about 50 cases here in NZ
Borders basically shut down as are pubs and clubs and any gatherings.
This weekend is the only steam show i do and it was cancelled .
Schools are still open which i think is a mistake .
I am concerned about one of my other  daughters who is  in cancer research at Auckland University
Auckland is NZ biggest city and a cesspit of internationals

Take care and keep safe every one

just received news from Italie, 793 death in one day, and to think they got the infection already a few weeks before it started here.
they even don't have any space anymore to bury their death…
Man we only at the start of a very big disaster…
I hope most country start to wake up and impose lockdowns everywhere, this is serious folks.
And to dose who think their liberty is taken away, it's for your own protection and that of your loved ones.
So if your government hasn't imposed a lockdown yet, do your self a favor, and take the measurements yourself, if you can, it's for your own good.
And please don't think you don't have it, you can carry it for weeks before it breaks out.

Cheers,

A shame you left your entertainment BIN at home... do I need to send you an express delivery? Any engine from me won't likely be quite the beauties you had packed to bring, but it might stave off the withdrawal shakes and sickness.

Today is Day 2 of my exile/quarantine at my Ranch near Vernon, Texas.

Thankfully, my daughter and fiancé arrived back in Dallas yesterday morning from Columbia. And Columbia Announced that they had closed their borders and were stopping all international flights yesterday too. So, they were very fortunate. There are 300 Peace Corp. workers trapped in Peru.

I left the house when she left for the airport. I spent most of Friday getting organized and unpacking. While unpacking, I realized I left the bin at home in which I had packed the three steam engines to bring with me. 🤬🤬🤬

My flooring crew made good progress on installing the engineered wood floors at the farm house yesterday and then told me they won’t be back until Monday. So, no work inside. We also got 4” of rain this week; so, I need to wait for it to dry out to work outside. I will probably spend the day cleaning the Barn.

Until yesterday, there were no reported COVID-19 cases in West Texas. A guy who lived in NYC flew to Dallas and then to Witchita Falls on Tuesday.  When he arrived in Witchita Falls  he checked into a hotel. Early Wednesday morning, he went to the Hospital and tested positive for the virus. Now, there are 5 cases in Witchita Falls (about 60 miles East of my Ranch).  This is not the first instance I have heard of people leaving NYC because they didn’t think they could get prompt treatment.

Take care everyone!

Charlie

yes, and the sad thing is, for some countries it's only starting.
For most European countries and the US the pandemic is still in growing line.
We only will start to see when the curve starts to flatten out by next weeks.
Then we know if a total lockdown was effective.
And it will take about estimate two months before we get a down ward curve
in Italië yesterday alone in one day 600 people.
Estimation is that the death toll will grow up in the few hundred thousands.

One thing is sure our world will change drastically after this…
It's sad that after each war or pandemic there will be a time of welfare.
And perhaps we all should think about how we can make the world better for your community and yourself…

But we please keep in mind not to depress yourself over this, we are in an age where communication was never so good as before.
Do a FaceTime call to your relatives, friends.
We got our lovely forum here show us what you're doing…
And it must not be steam related.
Look at:

Danny

May I proffer some personal observations? ‘“Attitude” can be the first and strongest thing to be dealt with. Move forward, keep a good sense of humor.

Part of that attitude is not offending many people by not addressing it as either Covid-19 or Corona Virus as that is what it is, despite what certain leaders would have you believe.

The company Marcy works for, which shall remain nameless but produce American Cast Iron and Pipe, won't shut down until they get a positive diagnosis on an employee. Foolish if you ask me, as it not only adds risk to the employees but also to the families(who are by all rights doing the required self quarantine).
And all in the time of year when the pollen is blowing around like yellow snow giving almost everyone the sniffles or a cough or sneezes.

It's no BS. I'm with Danny--better be safe than sorry. At my work we are also required to work from home now. Drastic measures are required to slow the epidemic to give our medical system some time to prepare for the worst.

Hi Guys,

The French president sad "nous sommes en guerre". (we are at war)
And that's true, we are now globally at war with an enemy who won't consider any peace treaty.

Here in Belgium we have a total lockdown and that is the most sensible thing to do.
I'm glad our government made the choice to to protect it's people above economics.
But on the other hand my thoughts also go out to the people who are, or will get in financial trouble by losing their work our a business that has to close.
I hope we are social enough to be mild on those people.

A lockdown here, means that only the essential business are open, food stores, pet sore who sell animal food, pharmacies, and doctors.
But all with displanary safety measures.
As for work only people who are active in necessary public roles like medical personal, food shop workers, transport (like I with goods trains) etc…
For the rest stay indoors is the message, and if you need to get out, safety distance and hygiene measurements , above all be aware and sensible.
You are also allowed to go out and take in some fresh air as long as you respect safety distances, and that is a healthy thing to do do.

But I also want to give a big THANK YOU to all medical staff world wide for there afford to safe lives.
But also all people that help out with our food and social help, these are the heroes of our biggest moment in need.

Personally I have so many projects in and around the house that I can stay in quarantine for the next 3 years.
Luckily I had all materials in the house to paint and redo a couple of rooms in the house.
The main corridor through the house is the space where all my display cabinets are.
And now it get a fresh coat of paint and some new display cases will be added.
Room that is desperately needed for my collection.

I also just red that some of our members and/or their relatives perhaps got the disease.
Please do know that we care for you and that our thoughts and prepares are with you.
To all I say be sensible and safe and my God protect you…

Cheers,
Danny

Great thread, guys. I just found it as I have been extremely busy with my work which has been stressful and somewhat exhausting for the last couple weeks. Charlie you absolutely made the right choice. This morning early I was able to buy toilet paper at our local supermarket. Yesterday morning I managed to get 15 gallons of water at Walmart along with some more paper towels. I don't usually shop for our family but I am the only one who doesn't mind being at a store when they open at 6 am or 7.

My son's wife is sick and the doc doesn't think it's Corona. However, we have been told that if at all sick, as a precaution, we should assume we have it and self quarantine.

Two days ago I went to my office at 7 am to pick up a few things to bring home. I was out before 8 am and before most others arrived. At home I can log into our mainframe and have the same work station I use at the office.

My daughter, who works in a medical office, is taking this less seriously. She believes it is mostly BS and says at work they showed her a webinar that has her believing there have been only 21 deaths world-wide. If this is true, it seems terribly irresponsible of her management. I made it very clear to her that bringing it home is not an acceptable option. I am old enough and obese enough that contracting it could be a most devastating problem. Simone and I have both had pneumonia in years past and it is no fun.

Last night I read that if you have this plague, you should use only tylenol and not any NSAIDS like ibuprofen, naproxen, aleve, and the like. It supposedly amplifies some of the problems. What an insidious bug!  Still.... we must prevail.

May God bless and keep you all.

That would scare me! it would be Mr. kimber at my farm.
As for the virus, I feel for all the people effected in so many ways, both physical and economical. My wife and I feel very fortunate, as I am self employed and rarely see more than 1 customer a day in person any more. We have moved the bulk of business to online sales. We rarely went out to eat, never went to bars, and a movie maybe once a year, so not giving up much to stay home! our nearest neighbor is a mile away, and the local town is 500 people at most. The most people i am ever around is at church, and they have even canceled that. One of our renters raises all every sort of beast and foul, so we may let them start paying the rent in food if things get bad. our local Dollar General is still pretty well stocked except for toilet paper, but there are corn cobs and duck feathers!
There are certainly disadvantages to living in the country, but at the moment i can't think of any. There is not much else my wife and i can do but "hole up" and keep the rest of our country in our prayers.

I can’t think of any disadvantages now.

Speaking of the thievery and scammers, this was posted the other day by our local police department

Quote
I just want to make you aware of a situation that just happened at my house this morning in Stewartville. A person knocked on our door stating they worked for the CDC and needed to walk through our house and check if we had the coronavirus. She stated she needed to walk through all the rooms. Luckily my husband, Brian, was home and answered the door. He knew it was a scam from the beginning and told her no I want to see your ID. She then stated she didn’t need to show him ID and that he could be arrested if he didn’t comply. So Brian said let’s call the cops then. He did call the cops as she turned and walked to her car and Brian followed her and reported her license plate number. The cops stated this is what was happening in the Twin Cities and they recently started getting a few reports in Rochester, but this was the first case reported in Stewartville. Wanted to make you aware so you can inform family members of this type of scam that is happening.

Nick, take it and use it wisely. Or save it and give it back later.  You and yours may need it. Or you can share it latter with good folks who can use it. Been there, done that.
On the topic of abusers, well, they can go rampant quickly and likely will. I will leave it to the imagination of what looting and thievery occurs from a societal element that practices it when times are good.

Nick,

People need to dispel the myths around notions of "free money". I encourage you to read up on the Alaska oil fund dividends that are paid out every year and the positive impact that has on the Alaska economy. This experiment is many decades old. For example, a $1000 for every American will boost the economy as it adds liquidity to it.

Believe it or not, from an economic perspective it is highly in each of our own personal best interests that you and every one else doesn't go broke during this epidemic. A healthy economy needs currency to flow like a current. I already work from home and my income is not affected. But if our fellow citizens cannot spend money that affects all of us. I really wish everyone would see that.

Nick .... I greatly admire your self reliant attitude, and wish that it was far more prevalent in our society today. Getting help within the community of friends and family is one thing, but expecting help from the government, especially if it really isn't needed, is something else entirely!

Wishing you and yours a smooth passage through these turbulent times!!!

Nick, my heart goes out to all the service workers made unemployed from this. :( We really need cash payments to those affected such as you. I hope labels of socialism and other political theory b.s. gets tossed aside and we just get creative.

That money has to come from somewhere and is something neither my wife or I want to take... We have always worked hard for everything we have and will continue to find whatever work we can until this passes. It has always bothered me how many people are out there taking advantage of what they think of as "free money". You would not believe all the letters and phone calls we get from the county/state when my wife was pregnant and after the baby was born telling us to sign up for this and that... I refuse to sign up for any of that because we wanted to have the kids and should have the ability to take care of them ourselves. A lot of the waitresses my wife works with are thinking of this as a vacation and the cashiers/cooks that are still at work are spending the slow time playing on their phones while my wife is scrubbing/sanitizing the restaurant floor to ceiling. The skin is literally falling off of her hands from washing/sanitizing so often.

The hardest part will be the time away from my parents (mid 50's and only 2 blocks away from home) and my grandparents (81 & 76), we visit with them two or three times a week, but if we are continuing to be out, I don't want to risk their health...

Also not looking good for LeSueur Swap Meet or Steam School :(

We are trying to pull out of a major historic natural disaster from 6 months ago. It was wicked and pushed us to the limits of mental and physical endurance. We are locked down now with the new Chinese Virus threat , and again into that hazy limbo of wondering what’s next to “hit the fan”.
May I proffer some personal observations? ‘“Attitude” can be the first and strongest thing to be dealt with. Move forward, keep a good sense of humor.
The concept of finishing projects to while-away-the-time can rapidly evolve into routine of trying not to get injured and trying to keep yourself and loved ones healthy and happy. In short , survival becomes a very concentrated effort. Finally, get extra communication devices. I lost a cell phone when I was alone and realized how distant and screwed I was. “I have fallen and I can’t  get up” takes a new perspective after dark, remote, and alone.

It's a smart move to self quarantine. Good news is that there are a number of studies underway and recently completed that shows anti-malaria drugs effectively cures this. Also, there are now vaccine trials. So the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. Just need time to build up stockpile of these new drugs.

Plenty of protection Bruce! 🤠

And in two weeks after everyone finishes their self quarantine periods, they are going to join me at the ranch.

All restaurants and bars also closed for the near future putting a lot of people out of work. But better that than having the health care system overwhelmed before they are ready.

This is what happened here to us, they say file for unemployment, but the online system was already down last night from so many people trying to do so. I am also assuming that with so many people signing up that it is going to take weeks or months to see any money and it's only going to be a fraction of what we had coming in. My wife's restaurant is remaining open for takeout only, so she is trying to pick up any cashiering shifts she can, but of course that is only a minimum wage job. We were prepared for this and can survive for the short run, but I do worry about them extending the closures...

Hang in there Nick!

Best of luck to you and your family, Charlie. You’re making the right decision and it sounds like you have the perfect place to escape to.
Everything is closed down around here, but I feel like we’re pretty fortunate since it has not really affected either one of our jobs. I work outdoors in construction and my wife got orders to work from home since she’s in IT. For several years now, she has had automatic delivery of some paper products through Amazon and discovered that we have 72 rolls of toilet paper on hand! :D

I can find outdoor work most any time other than March and November, looks like this came at the wrong time for us!

Will automatic Amazon deliveries be affected? I see Prime delivery is now up to 4 days.

I have alway kept the freezer full, food canned on the shelf and have bought in bulk to save money, so we luckily didn't have to go to shopping last minute. In fact, I had put 24 loaves of bread in the freezer last month because it was on sale for 49 cents/loaf at the local gas station.

Wise decision Charlie. Take some engines with you to play with. I had to self-quarantine for 14 days after coming back from Asia last month, also without corona symptoms. Went back to work this week only to learn today that the university is now closed to all staff and students for the rest of this week during spring break...possibly longer. All restaurants and bars also closed for the near future putting a lot of people out of work. But better that than having the health care system overwhelmed before they are ready.

Take care and keep in touch,

It will be interesting to see how bad this actually turns out in the long run - we'll know a lot more in a few weeks I'm sure. Good luck with your farmhouse restoration work Charlie .... lucky you, that you have such a wonderful escape valve available .....  think of it as a bachelor's vacation!

Sorry to hear that this vector is headed your way, but third world connections are always a roll of the dice in so many ways.

If it makes you feel better to quarantine yourself, then that is all the reason you need to go ahead and do it. The many hours flight in the closed circulation of the aluminum tube, is likely your daughters greatest chance at exposure, but getting home soon may well be her best bet, as it is problematic how much longer airlines can operate under the current paradigm. Personally, I think (or at least hope) that this issue will not be nearly as bad as advertised here in the first world, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking every reasonable precaution that you can think up.

Truly hope everything works out for the best for you and your family there Charlie!!!
Title: COVID-19 aka Corona Virus
Post by: txlabman on March 17, 2020, 09:25:50 am
I wanted to give my Forum Friends an update.  This virus is now disrupting me personally.  No, as far as I know I don't have the virus or any symptons.

My youngest daughter has been teaching at a college in Nevia, Columbia as a Fullbright Scholar.  Yesterday, the United States State Department which administers the Fullbright Program and the Peace Corps, issued a worldwide edict for all participants in these programs to immediately return to the USA.  Anyone that doesn't comply is on their own and the State Department will not be responsible for them.  So, my daughter and her fiancé are returning to our home in Dallas on Thursday from Columbia.

My daughter reports that the people in Columbia have a huge distrust of their government and are not taking this seriously.  In less than a week, Nevia has gone from zero reported cases to 10 cases in a city with approximately 300k people.

In addition, my daughter and her fiancé will be traveling through the Bogota and Houston international Airports on their return trip.

When they return to our home they will self-quarantine for 14 days as recommended.

So, I have made the difficult decision to leave my home for the quarantine period and beyond (until this virus plays out) and live alone with my dog at my ranch.  My wife thinks I am insane.  My four daughters think it is the right decision.  I am the most at risk from age, health and fitness of anyone in my family.

I have a freezer full of wild game and enough other resources and books to survive there without leaving for at least a month.  I will be working on restoring a 1905 farm house that we bought in January which is about 1 mile from our Ranch Gate.

Unfortunately, I have very limited internet/cell service.  So, starting Thursday you may not hear a lot from me for a while.
