All restaurants and bars also closed for the near future putting a lot of people out of work. But better that than having the health care system overwhelmed before they are ready.

This is what happened here to us, they say file for unemployment, but the online system was already down last night from so many people trying to do so. I am also assuming that with so many people signing up that it is going to take weeks or months to see any money and it's only going to be a fraction of what we had coming in. My wife's restaurant is remaining open for takeout only, so she is trying to pick up any cashiering shifts she can, but of course that is only a minimum wage job. We were prepared for this and can survive for the short run, but I do worry about them extending the closures...

Hang in there Nick!

I have been reading with interest in how this Corona virus is effecting everyone, it gives us a candid glimpse Into people/families personal experiences from all across this Country & the globe,  we should start another thread with that as the topic.
Charlie I hope for the best in your situation,  I'm  afraid I might just enjoy that kind of exile for a few weeks, assuming nothing bad (healthwise) comes of it. Be safe , I hope your git kit has protection packed in with it.

Plenty of protection Bruce! 🤠

I should be able to get a lot of work done on our house.

And in two weeks after everyone finishes their self quarantine periods, they are going to join me at the ranch.

Good luck all around Charlie. And be extra careful working alone in isolation. I too am cut out for solitude in my life. And best for you too Nick. You and your family are young go getters and your problem solving skills are sharp. I love and cherish all my cyber steam friends and hope we all emerge stronger and better than before. The only time the US and the economy has not recovered is.....NEVER!

It's a smart move to self quarantine. Good news is that there are a number of studies underway and recently completed that shows anti-malaria drugs effectively cures this. Also, there are now vaccine trials. So the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. Just need time to build up stockpile of these new drugs.

Nick, my heart goes out to all the service workers made unemployed from this. :( We really need cash payments to those affected such as you. I hope labels of socialism and other political theory b.s. gets tossed aside and we just get creative.

Properly viewed, this whole thing is not without its awkward but humorous moments, as the self-preservation society found out.

We are trying to pull out of a major historic natural disaster from 6 months ago. It was wicked and pushed us to the limits of mental and physical endurance. We are locked down now with the new Chinese Virus threat , and again into that hazy limbo of wondering what’s next to “hit the fan”.
May I proffer some personal observations? ‘“Attitude” can be the first and strongest thing to be dealt with. Move forward, keep a good sense of humor.
The concept of finishing projects to while-away-the-time can rapidly evolve into routine of trying not to get injured and trying to keep yourself and loved ones healthy and happy. In short , survival becomes a very concentrated effort. Finally, get extra communication devices. I lost a cell phone when I was alone and realized how distant and screwed I was. “I have fallen and I can’t  get up” takes a new perspective after dark, remote, and alone.

That money has to come from somewhere and is something neither my wife or I want to take... We have always worked hard for everything we have and will continue to find whatever work we can until this passes. It has always bothered me how many people are out there taking advantage of what they think of as "free money". You would not believe all the letters and phone calls we get from the county/state when my wife was pregnant and after the baby was born telling us to sign up for this and that... I refuse to sign up for any of that because we wanted to have the kids and should have the ability to take care of them ourselves. A lot of the waitresses my wife works with are thinking of this as a vacation and the cashiers/cooks that are still at work are spending the slow time playing on their phones while my wife is scrubbing/sanitizing the restaurant floor to ceiling. The skin is literally falling off of her hands from washing/sanitizing so often.

The hardest part will be the time away from my parents (mid 50's and only 2 blocks away from home) and my grandparents (81 & 76), we visit with them two or three times a week, but if we are continuing to be out, I don't want to risk their health...

Also not looking good for LeSueur Swap Meet or Steam School :(

Nick .... I greatly admire your self reliant attitude, and wish that it was far more prevalent in our society today. Getting help within the community of friends and family is one thing, but expecting help from the government, especially if it really isn't needed, is something else entirely!

Wishing you and yours a smooth passage through these turbulent times!!!

Nick,

People need to dispel the myths around notions of "free money". I encourage you to read up on the Alaska oil fund dividends that are paid out every year and the positive impact that has on the Alaska economy. This experiment is many decades old. For example, a $1000 for every American will boost the economy as it adds liquidity to it.

Believe it or not, from an economic perspective it is highly in each of our own personal best interests that you and every one else doesn't go broke during this epidemic. A healthy economy needs currency to flow like a current. I already work from home and my income is not affected. But if our fellow citizens cannot spend money that affects all of us. I really wish everyone would see that.

Chris, you are probably right and more knowledgeable on the subject than myself, but the major fault is that too many people are abusing it... I know far too many of them

Nick, take it and use it wisely. Or save it and give it back later.  You and yours may need it. Or you can share it latter with good folks who can use it. Been there, done that.
On the topic of abusers, well, they can go rampant quickly and likely will. I will leave it to the imagination of what looting and thievery occurs from a societal element that practices it when times are good.

Speaking of the thievery and scammers, this was posted the other day by our local police department

Quote
I just want to make you aware of a situation that just happened at my house this morning in Stewartville. A person knocked on our door stating they worked for the CDC and needed to walk through our house and check if we had the coronavirus. She stated she needed to walk through all the rooms. Luckily my husband, Brian, was home and answered the door. He knew it was a scam from the beginning and told her no I want to see your ID. She then stated she didn’t need to show him ID and that he could be arrested if he didn’t comply. So Brian said let’s call the cops then. He did call the cops as she turned and walked to her car and Brian followed her and reported her license plate number. The cops stated this is what was happening in the Twin Cities and they recently started getting a few reports in Rochester, but this was the first case reported in Stewartville. Wanted to make you aware so you can inform family members of this type of scam that is happening.

Unbelievable!

Total Scum Bag.

If she had knocked on our door, she would have been talking to Mr. Colt; Mr. Glock or Mr. Winchester!
