This is a Plank Excelsior I once owned ??? I think it was one size down from their largest.

That is quite possibly correct Jurgen, that would explain the mechanism with the hand wheel on the crankshaft near the main bearing.
I don’t have that mechanism on my Schoenner 165/5s in any case.

Certainly, the labeling can be wrong. I looked up the machines in question in the Schiffmann catalog. In the picture of the Plank 161, at least 1 manhole is visible (even with a magnifying glass).
Interesting is the note for the Schoenner 165
"Current knowledge: with manhole cover = Schoenner, without manhole cover = Falk; however, whether this has been true since 1917 is not certain!"
The Schiffmann catalog is a trustworthy source for me. Since both machines are unfortunately not in my collection and I can therefore not compare them side by side, I do not want to commit myself.

I wonder if the large vertical with the placard stating ‘Plank’ is actually a Schoenner?
(Attachment Link)
I agree, Schoenner (cause of the inspection holes)

Here you will find an interesting exhibition. Unfortunately closed for a long time due to work on the fire protection system.
Enjoy it.
