...and another D16
« on: March 24, 2021, 05:29:04 pm »
For a non-Wilesco collector, i really do appear to be on a roll here... ::)

Just bought this locally, found it on something here much like Craigslist, and figured 30 bucks wouldn´t be too much for some extra parts...the whistle alone is worth nearly that over here.

Was my plan to take it down for the parts straight away, but figured i could give it a shot of WD40, to see what was hidden under all that soot and grime on there, and i got better straight away.

At its arrival the bushing for the whistle was missing in the boiler, something which clearly wasn´t showing at the listing, as they´d put the whistle in place when taking the picture.

But when inspecting the whistle closer this turned up, and i figured that i just as well could solder it in right away.

Having invested the time soldering that bushing back in place, i felt that a full clean and a run was in place, just to ensure that every part was "back in business".

Does run quite well now, but clearly a few years since last, as everything eventhough very well oiled, was squeeking until it had eaten ½ a boiler or so.
Instead of taking it down, i now am sort of considering to mount some covers on that engine, since i do have a standalone D16 engine here anyway, and send this back on the market 8)
Cheers

Nice buy Jan, and what a transformation!! By the way, I added another D16... couldn’t pass up this unfired beauty... I think the oil can may be worth $20-30 on it’s own.

Looks like the previous owner was a pyromaniac.

I do like those older whistles.

Your lucky I didn't see that Nick, I've been looking for an engine made around my birthday,  that's a nice one.

Yes....you may wish to squirrel this D16 away....you may also find you Need a "Big Block" for your rapidly improving D405... it would be so nice to have a couple spare big blocks ready to serve!

Lucky for sure, every time I get a melted out bushing on Wilesco I find that the boiler end cap will leak from the conflagration that caused the overheating in the first instance.

If i found one in this condition and at that price over here Nick, i´d certainly bite the bait as well...Wilesco collector or not.
It´s a beaut, and the oil can a very nice boon, congrats!

No chance Bruce, this brand has had its time here.
The few i have left, is restricted to "current entertainers", and those few telling me a personal story.

Save your time buddy, they didn´t make those during the revolution! ;)

Ben, just dug this one out of the "Wilesco Bucket" again, to grab some covers for this engine ;)

Should be a D24 engine in there somewhere as well, so i won´t be needing Big Blocks as is.

However, as far as the D405 goes, i don´t plan on fitting one on there.
Might easily change my mind once i see yours going, but until then the main "mechanical" here, would be to get those terrible drivesprockets replaced with a less noisy solution.

Hello Jan,

great work!!! There must have been dirty fingers again. However, it was worth it. The D16 is sure to bring great joy to someone again.
Cheers

D16s are a great size. Plenty of power in smaller foot print.
Nice job Jan, good grab and a good clean up.

...and another ::)

Just picked this D161 up locally today, and it must be the worst here yet...but extremely cheap so i went for it, as it has loads of salvageable parts on there.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Came with a "rustic" homemade steel boiler, welded straight onto the base no less...after the "engineer" appearently learned, that he couldn´t weld it onto the aluminum runways as planned :D

Wow!...this D161 would make quite the "Rat Rod" if you could actually make it run? Lots of good parts there if not.
