I have yet to get a worn out Märklin compression/blow-by wise. Do all three of yours run well and generate power to light the lamps?

I think Märklin has the best build quality of all the makes. (This is based on 3 TEs and 2 orphan stationaries.) I have a tatty one on the way so we will see if that continues...

I have about a dozen in this style and have only ran 2 or 3 of them... but yes I am very happy with Märklin build quality, and please don't bid against me  ;) ;)  :D

Back before I had a family and a house to pay for I was getting 3 to 4 packages in the mail a day, 2 or 3 accessories and 1 or 2 engines. I was working 90-105 hours a week (many 16 hour days) and had no time to do anything with them other than open them up and make sure they were dry and good for storage. I had an entire bedroom at my parents house with full shelves. As Walter pointed out to you when you mentioned the dust on his engines, it would be a full time job cleaning all of them... It took me nearly 2 years just to get the engines out of their house and moved over onto shelves. Someday I will get around to playing with them all and I have plenty of projects awaiting my retirement (if that ever happens  :D ) I have often thought of selling off a good portion of the collection to fund something larger, but I am no good at that and don't think I have sold ore than two dozen engines from the collection over the past 15 years.
