Bing poppet valve
« on: September 02, 2023, 10:36:56 am »
I recently acquired this engine and I'm trying to put it all back together.  I've been online looking at pictures and can't seem to find one made like this one. Someone at some point started a restoration of this engine and never finished it. All the piping was missing and I'm trying to figure out what went where. I have run steam line to engine that one was simple. Now trying to find which line went to witch valve and to what port on valve. Also looking for photos and some measurements of govner for this engine. The base of this engine 21 3/4 x 19 1/2. To top of stack is 26". The flywheel is 6 1/8 diameter. The boiler is 11 1/2 long and 4 1/2 diameter. If you have one like this I would love to have some photos of it. If you can give me any info on this engine would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Randy

@Damnfmaschine may be of help

I have two Bing poppet valves but can’t quite see the pictures well enough on the phone to know if they’re the same

Thanks Nick. I have 2 also but the other one is smaller and set up different then this one. It doesn't have govner and piping is a lot simpler on it. Here is picture of the 2 side by side.

Thanks @Nick, I’m in the country at the moment with limited signal so downloads are not very good, however here is a link my latest Bing Poppet run; I think that this is the largest model?
There some differences in orientation of the boiler and engine frame etc.
It is also my opinion that the governor mount is a later addition as it is not square to any other part which is unusual. (None of my poppet engines have a governor)

Made safety valve for the Bing poppet valve engine.  I had and original I copied. The original is on left of picture, the one I made on right and on engine.

I'd never be able to tell the difference between the original and your excellent copy!

Please take a look to TexasSteam's Chanel - Scott made a nice video of Bing's 130/383
poppet valve engine. His engine is almost original in all details except that the color
of the platform "disappeared" -

Yours seams that the boiler/house has been placed wrong way - the platform originally
was wood with sheet metal top - the governor never existed on this model. The model
probably was restored in the mind of making a nice looking steam plant instead of
the original look. I also own a 130/383 wich had a lot of modifications - I have
restored it to original specification - but there is still a lot to do - mainly color.
I will post a picture from underneath to show you the piping of the model.
Arnold :D

NB.It is a very nice steam plant with many features and one of Bing's top designs.

Thanks. I'm not sure about this engine. It has a lot of differentiates from others I've seen.  The platform is wood with metal sheet on top. But I sure it's not the original.  I've noticed this one has crank guard that I haven't seen on other engines. The mount for the crank guard is cast into the base of the engine. So I'm sure it is original. The govner base is the same styling as the throttle valve base. So it would seem it's original to the engine.

Here I have some pictures of my Bing - it was over painted by a former owner.
the guard of the crank is standard on this model - but no governor.
