Empire B35 Lives Again
« on: August 18, 2022, 02:32:31 pm »
I got in my donor B30 in today and took off the bottom: mounting plate, iron cover, and heater blanket.  Before I did all that I test to see what the resistance was and got a good ~35ohms.  Move it over to my B35 and insured I didn't have any shorts to the base/tank and doubled check the resistance.  All Good on the Transplant!

The red thumb knob came over to.  The whistle stack kind of a bust, fits very loosey-goosey and I don't get any whistle - just a bunch of steam shooting up - boo!

Here is a YouTube where the B35 is running the B47 Ferris Wheel!  I have to really let it build up some steam before she'll move it again, which in the video you can hear her slowing down.  Never the less, super fun.

New power cord will be here tomorrow (using a jerry-rigged one now).

Now what to do about the whistle stack.... ugh.

Great run, great whine!

As to the smokestack/safety-valve, it looks
to need some tightening or perhaps a good
sealing washer between the SV screw 'head'
and the inside of the stack.  You should see
some leakage but certainly less than seen.
Not a big deal, everyone that has been buying
and running Empires for a while has done it.

Congrats on the transplant,

Getting some leakage around the sight glass too though I don't want to mess with that, I see other thread where those bits fall to bits.   I'll look for some post about the smokestack/safety valve too.

Good news / Bad news....

Good news there was a small o-ring in my D10 kit of seals I had got for it some months back - fits perfectly on the screw.  So no more bubbling up steam water from the Smokestack / Safety-Valve.  I only now have just have the leak around the sight glass, mainly from the top.  I haven't the courage to even attempt to fix that, which leads me to....

Bad new is I was messing with the whistle top and the stub on the whistle just fell off.  I have a feeling it had been hit before as it looked a little smashed/bent over to me.  I am sure I had the biggest frowny face on known to man when it broke off. :'(

This B35 while cool to watch and listen too, doesn't seem to want to run much.  It does okay on the Ferris Wheel but not the not the Wind Mill or the stand alone Water pump.  Heck it won't even move my  Wilesco shop.

Sorry to hear about the whistle.  Put up a picture or two of the damage
and maybe it is fixable.

As to power...I do not think power, in particular torque, was ever the
strong suit of this engine.  More of a 'cool' engine with a different
sound.

I couldn't see how this could be fixed but I wouldn't say I am smart or anything ;-)  Photo attached.

Yes, torque is what I meant.  It gets up to speed, stays there and sounds WAY cool.  I guess now I'll have to find another Empire that can run all the accessories or live with the D10 (which is funny how this little guys can run the Windmill & Pump just dandy).

Looks like that whistle part is an insert into the lever body.  I'm guessing the only fix would be to dismantle and put (drill) out that insert and have a new one machined.  Fat chance of that ever happening.

In other (bad) news, I picked up an Empire Model 50 pump and it also came in yesterday.  The brass rod for the "bucket" had come loose and there was a badly rusted ball bearing (about the size of a BB) - I assume it acts like a check valve.  I cleaned up the ball with 1500 wet sandpaper, figured out a bucket to / leaver rod, and generally cleaned up the insides of the pump/bucket.  Movement is nice and smooth now but it will hardly pump water.  I can't figure out why, perhaps it is just too worn too suck up water.   The funny thing is, my Empire Windmill's pump looks like a 100 year old rusted junk car inside the pump but it can move water like crazy with very little action movement.

Sorry to hear the pump is a bit of a problem.
Could you try some waterproof grease of some
sort to coat the inside of the piston and help
it pump more efficiently?  Perhaps the piston
has some sort of flexible washer that needs
replacement.  I've never had my pump apart,
so I don't know how the piston seals.  I'd
say it is a good bet that is the problem.

Good Luck,

I tried some grease/thick oil thinking the same thing - though I know the stuff I used isn't water proof.  Didn't help a lick.  I suppose there could have been some kind of a flex washer but how it would have mounted on the piston I wouldn't know (doesn't seem to me it would have had one).

I was hoping the whistle top that broke off was an insert into the body, once I got it under the magnifying glass that isn't the case.  I think my only hope is another (not correct) whistle or another Empire donor whistle.  I will be so bummed if I have to get a "replacement that fits" as it would really mess up the original look of the engine.  I just might stick the whistle top on just so it "looks" right - just have to figure out a way to make it stay on.

Another Test, endurance - Not so much but at least she will spin the Ferris Wheel!

In other news, I bought another Empire off eBay that is missing bits and bobs but has the Whistle body, hopefully it isn't a fool's errand and I can transplant it and use the Whistle top from the B30.

The B30 I think I have decided to try and get running too.  The tank / sight glass is in good shape but odd repairs where done for the whistle body and odd bolt (whistle was mount on the side).  Photo attached - which I didn't polish the tank at all - other than cleaning up the mounting holes.  The base is in darn good shape too, other than missing its badge.
