Large Plank Rehabilitation Completed
« on: November 11, 2022, 07:20:54 pm »
Probably a pre-1910 large Ernst Plank engine with a base that measures 17" x 17" and a 9cm diameter boiler. The engine needed disassembly for rust removal, cleaning and preservation of the original base finish and the damaged finish of the cast iron engine base. The steam line from the boiler to the engine needed to be re-soldered on both ends. One oil cup was incorrectly positioned on the bottom of the eccentric ring and needed to be re-installed topside. Several leaky gaskets needed to be replaced including the on on the displacement oiler. The sight glass bushings leaked and needed to be sealed. The pressure gauge/safety valve needed a replacement faux face (not shown in the video.) After repairs and re-assembly the engine is shown in the video running on compressed air.

perfect restoration - I prefer also to keep the original state of an engine with
only necessary repairs and cleaning. Never remove old color and patina or polish
to high luster - that reduces the value extremely. You did a good job and that is
really a piece of history.
Congrats, Arnold

Congratulations!
A really impressive engine, a wonderful runner(love the sound!) and even the whistle sounds great after all those years.

And, as other comments have justly mentioned, nothing is better than a sympathetic, conservative restoration, keeping as much of the original state as possible.

Thanks for sharing this.

Very nice work and very typical of what usually needs to be done after 100 years or so. Now time for steam!
