I got this in the mail today, I Really wanted a bit older unit with what I call the "Banjo" style green single wick meths burner, but as this one was NIB and the price was good, I bagged it.
  It does appear unfired! The gloss black fire house is shiny enough you can see the reflection of burner in the black paint. Also the solder joints are clean, I have seen engines that have been stored for long periods where the solder joints have corrosion.
  I suppose a "true" collector might leave this un-fired...its not a rare engine, and I don't own any shelf queen's, so I will clean the dust and the boiler a little and give it my version of a tune up to see if I can get it to run on my 2.32 psi aquarium pump.
  It does have the water fill level port. The only flaw I can find is the strap that holds the boiler down does not sit perfectly level, I will see if I can correct that when I tune it.
  It's kind of funny, these little MM1's bring about 2 to 3X that of a MM2 in similar condition....must be I am not the only one that likes the "little" engines :)

Update: I have run it on Steam, it goes pretty fast!

  The issue with the crooked Boiler band was the fire House was shifted, it was easy to make it straight.
  Even though it runs on meths, the boiler is pretty black all ready, I am not sure if the paint is curing? Or what I think "may" be happening is steam oil drips off the Cylinder and runs down the boiler and onto the meths burner where it burns and makes soot.

  The instructions advise to stop the engine mid run and add oil, specially during run-in... I am running shell 460 steam oil (fairly thick) and when I oil everything it turns over very smooth, but after a couple minutes running on steam, if I pull burner and let it run down it all ready feels like the piston is "dry"...this model has the "plain" cylinder, but I am thinking of adding a piston oil groove similar to the new models in hopes of oil staying in the Cylinder a bit longer.
  It heats up pretty fast, even without pre heated water, and there are Very few parts, only 2 screws!
  I can see quite a bit of opportunity to improve the "bearings" on the flywheel and a few other small improvements, but it's a neat little engine.


Photo: soot on boiler is from only 2 runs, I may very well be over oiling, but I would welcome any thoughts on how to reduce oil dripping on meths burner!

The boilers are also lacquered so it won’t be a simple polish the first time... instead it has to be polished off with a little extra help, my go to is Maas and 0000 steel wool.

Hello Nick, I tried 91% rubbing alcohol on first run, and 100% Alcohol on second run...both runs I see a small wisp of dark black smoke rising, this is why I thought maybe my meths burner is getting steam oil dripping on it.

Lacquer is not high temp....maybe I need to buff all that Lacquer off...
