What was that Stuart boiler fired on ..... coal?

Looks like it will be a nice S50 when cleaned up Nick, need to get a large BIX for it now if you haven't already got one.

What the heck were they using to fuel that 500 series Stuart  boiler? It certainly wasn't Meths, which is what they are set up to burn.

Man .... That's nasty Nick, but I'm sure it'll come right, if you use a few more of your best shirts cleaning it up!?!?!

I don’t need the S-50 as this makes number 5 here...  :D  I bought it because I needed another boiler and I wasn’t expecting the seller to accept my very low offer.

I have the long BIX which would be enough for running the engine unloaded, but would love to get the long/wide one I have seen.

It did come with a broken alcohol burner, so who knows what they were currently using... I shook most of the soot off into the shirts that went straight to the garbage. I think tomorrow I will be taking this outside and giving it a good blast of air to blow off the rest of the soot. The base is very charred, but I’ll definitely give it one steaming as arrived.

I got the long wide one of John Loughin in the US when I bought his 504 boiler and run it straight off a 9KG BBQ gas bottle, it really pumps the heat out.

Nick, you can count yourself lucky - I got a Fleischmann steam roller with a great deal of soot, too, but in this case the seller had tried to wash it off with water. Realizing that didn't help much, he packed up everything (wt and sooty) and dispatched it to me...
Well, for him the best solution I must say.
Anyway, I think the shirt will clean up nicely...

Looks like they were running kerosene.  Do you have a power washer?

It's not so bad. It's only soot.
A warm bath, a good soap...😂

No problem at all - Nick - this is a nice Stuart Plant with the mill engine - classic!
As we have covid19 rules - you have to wash hands anyway - so what matters

Cheers Arnold ;)

This photo made me laugh out loud....my Very first thought was this may have been what the guys face looked like when that "Wilesco boiler made a Mushroom cloud" from recent ebay ad posted in different thread.
Anyway, thanks for the laugh Nick!
