Ana a successful launch test as part of the Orion Mission: Ascent Abort 2 the first week of July.

My youngest daughter's friend's father is a senior NASA team member on the Orion Mission.  Her best friend attended the launch at Cape Canaveral and brought us the patch from the launch.

Kind of sad and disappointing really, that fifty years hence we're not even an increment beyond where we once already were, so long ago. But I guess political correctness, and the negation of national incentive, have done their work and successfully managed to dim the lights of "the Shining City on the Hill"!

Jim ... have you seen the movie "The Dish" ?

It's about the critical roll Australia played in getting the live broadcast of the "giant leap" for the whole world to see, and I reckon it to be an excellent film, IMHO!

Cool ....  I'll bet while there, you could feel a sense of History, Significance and Pride!

I watched it happen, and I have you folks to thank for that!!!

Yes amazing sense of 'something' very very big, if that makes sense.

Even though I was only 6, I can remember the excitement leading up to it. And my teachers name was Mrs Booth and she set the TV up
at the front of the class and we were all (the whole 14 of us, I have all their names and signatures in a dictionary that we were all given) allowed to crowd around and watch.

The landing craft was built by so many of the bigger kids and the newspapers for weeks beforehand gave away pieces of a model landing craft each week to build. I can still remember
putting my completed model in the back of my Mum's two door Ford Falcon (she loved that car!).

Months later you could write into the newspaper and each kid was sent a small piece of 'moon rock' which I doubt was authentic, I don't know what happened to mine.

Incredible that this was 50 years ago.

They were some very professional astronauts!

" This is Apollo Control at 36 minutes. That's the end of the tape. We have a report on the launch heart rates now from the Flight Surgeon. Commander, Neil Armstrong's heart rate 110, Command Module Pilot, Mike Collins 99, Lunar Module Pilot, Buzz Aldrin 88. These compare with their first Gemini flights, their first liftoff back in the Gemini program

Daniel, I really enjoyed the two videos done by Bill Whittle.  I'm gonna try to make my grown kids watch them this weekend.  They are coming into town (Houston area) for other reasons, but we may brave the traffic around NASA and Space Center Houston Saturday (July 20) and attempt to get in to see some of the events that are planned down there for the 50th anniv.

I also was 6 ,& I remember my class being trotted off across the street (with a few other classes ) to the Nuns convent (living quarters ) & watching the tv , it stands out only to me in that it was the only time we were ever taken to the convent , as that was strictly "off limits" to anyone but the Nuns.

Hopefully the next two videos (he's scheduled four), will be just as good. He certainly puts the event into the context of the times as I remember them. I like the cap gun bit, it fits!

Have fun at NASA Scott, I hope that also proves to be a good and positive memory for you!

For those that might enjoy Bill Whittle's four part video series on the whole Apollo program and what led up to it. Obviously I think it is really good, providing much that was wholly behind the scenes at the time, and putting it well into the context of the times. I'm learning a lot, and loving it!

Here is episode 2:

Episode 1 was at the bottom in my first post in this thread, and I'll post up the others as they become available.

These men are the “REAL HEROES “ not Actors, t.v. Celebs and especially not Sports figures. These men strapped there butts to a rocket leaving there wives & families behind not knowing if they would blowup on the pad or be able to make it back in to the atmosphere for the advancement of mankind truly making them pioneers. This is the definition of a true “HERO” in my book.
