Early this morning we visited the graves of friends, family, and fellow Americans who gave their sacrifice and so much more for our freedoms. We felt a bit like outlaws.
This year is so very different. This year has government guidelines and mandates for social distancing. Many annual Memorial Day Ceremonies at the Soldiers Memorial have been cancelled. The National Cemetery is closed to the public but “they will allow families to recognize their loved ones while staying socially distant from others”. The official services have been made “brief” and there is some virtual services that will be made available on Youtube. The Boy Scouts have been prohibited from laying flags on the graves this year as an enforcement of social distancing.
I wonder what those brave veterans would think about the many freedoms we have suspended in the name of safety, and I hope some of us remember the safety those veterans gave up for our freedoms.
