One of my radios
« on: January 07, 2020, 10:18:22 pm »
I mentioned in my introduction that one of my other hobbies was antique radios. This is one I just finished, a GE E-91 radio from 1936. The Colorama dial was only used for one year. The color of the dial changes from red to green as the station is tuned in.

Good looking radio with a neat dial - reminds me of the old Zenith we listened to BT (before television).

Nice to see someone is still into the old radios. Radios were the first of my different collections, starting 57 yrs ago! I sold most of them a few years back to make room ( and money) for steam engines. I still have a few crystal sets, a restored Philco 90B, a few horns, and a bunch of the metal AK table top models. The AKs would be gone, but the shipping is more than they are worth-they were still magnificent radios in their day.

Thanks for the compliments. I know what you mean about the AK’s, I’ve got a pretty good selection of them myself.

Congratulations on the restoration of the GE E-91.

I would be interested in seeing a picture with the back off exposing the tubes. Does this radio have an electric cord or does it use the old A/B Battery Configuration?

Here’s a shot of the back. It’s not powered on because all of the tubes are metal so no glow. Also, there is a 25 volt transformer mounted above the power transformer. The original transformer was replaced sometime in the past with one without the 25 volt windings for the Colorama display so I had to add this as well as repair the display that was modified to work like a regular dial light. It does run on house current.

SteamerJ, what models?

S20R
SX-71
SX-100 I think it’s the MarkII
HQ-140-XA

I have to say that the Hammarlund is my favorite. Not fancy and could use a tuneup but still works great!

I have a Par EF-SWL over a tree limb in the back yard. It’s only about 15 feet up but works pretty good especially being in a housing plan.
Best Regards
John
