Interesting to me that Nick actually saw his grandmother's windmill self destruct. When I was researching these windmills, several reviewers also saw the same thing, I suppose its fun to watching a storm thru window and see how fast your windmill is turning, in this way several people have witnessed the "death wobble" right before the fan comes unglued.
I think balancing the fan will give you "more" storm resistance, customers that did not know about balancing had reported feeling a strong vibration when they put a hand on the tower in strong breeze. I put my Windmill head on flat table in the house with fan blades out over the side of table and the heavy blade moves to 6 o'clock position, I taped coins to the 12 o'clock position until the fan would not drift no matter where I positioned it indicates balanced condition. Mine took two Quarters and a Nickle. I went out to the windmill on a strong wind day and touched my tower and could feel NO vibration. I don't think balancing will make your windmill Hurricane proof, but I would not be surprised if it doubles the amount of wind speed the windmill can tolerate.
