William McArthur invented the Splayd – an Australian invention
The Splayd is a multipurpose eating utensil that combines the functions of a spoon, fork, and knife into one tool.
It was invented by William McArthur in the 1940s in Sydney, Australia.
The design was inspired by the need for a practical solution for women who struggled to manage multiple utensils at social gatherings.
McArthur's wife, Suzanne, initially sold the Splayd at her café, and it gained popularity as a wedding gift in Australia during the 1950s and 1960s. By 1991, over 4.75 million Splayds had been sold worldwide, making it an iconic example of Australian product design.
