Best method of polishing Jensen boiler?
« on: April 12, 2019, 06:34:30 pm »
What's the best method of polishing a neglected Jensen boiler?

Appreciate any advice on what you use.

Jim, I have always used either Maas polish or SimiChrome polish...both smell the same so I think they are the same formula sold under different names.  Usually available by tube or tub on eBay.

I just put some on a cotton rag and rub, rub, rub...clean rag to remove residue...   I don't use a power buffer as the nickel plating is often so thin you can get a bald spot in the nickel quickly using a power buffer.  Just rub by hand and take notice if any baldness is developed.

Thanks Rog for the brands of polish (available in Oz!) and thanks for the warning to be not to heavy handed.

+1 for Maas and Simichrome, same product/results, different packaging. It's all I use...

I have been using Maas and Simichrome ever since Cedge (Steve) introduced me to it near 18 years ago.

And I've been a Maas/Simichrome user since Rog recommended it to me in Jan 2008  ;)

And I'm still waiting on a royalty check for all the good PR !!!  Seriously, it's good, gentle polish...all I have used since my first Jensen.

I grew up with the stuff, which admittedly might make me a bit biased, but i really prefer Autosol.

Through the years iīve worked quite a bit on older Brit and Jap bikes, which includes A LOT of polishing on aluminum and chrome...and in the last years quite a few Jensen boilers have seen attention as well.
Consider myself quite open minded, so i have paid dearly (postage incl.) to check out Motherīs Finest, Mass and SimiChrome, in order to hunt down the easiest/best stuff to use.

At first the Autosol cream appears to be quiteh identical to Maas/SimiChrome, but i still find that it is better at dissolving gunk (like black Esbit residue), and slightly more abrasive, which generally makes polishing faster, both freehanded and on the buffingwheel.

That said, on the old riveted boilers, i usually turn to less abrasive silverware polishing products, to avoid gnawing off the plating on the rivet heads.
Cheers
