Jim, I have always used either Maas polish or SimiChrome polish...both smell the same so I think they are the same formula sold under different names.  Usually available by tube or tub on eBay.

I just put some on a cotton rag and rub, rub, rub...clean rag to remove residue...   I don't use a power buffer as the nickel plating is often so thin you can get a bald spot in the nickel quickly using a power buffer.  Just rub by hand and take notice if any baldness is developed.
