Need good Wileso gray/grey paint match
« on: February 16, 2021, 06:44:29 pm »
Hello folks , maybe someone could save me some time & trouble , I'm restoring a gray/grey ( for you oversees mates 😊) base Wilesco  D32 plant and have decided to repaint the base. Was hoping maybe one of you have already found a good match for this color(or colour paint) , any help would be appreciated.

I do not have a color match, but being it’s a metallic looking paint, I would highly recommend checking out the Testors brand spray paint in a hobby shop for model cars

Check out some of these:

Hey Bruce, check and see if there's a company called Colortec in your area, there's several in MI.
I needed some paint mixed up to a certain color. They had to have something, like a base plate, in
the color you want, even some paint chips. They'll scan it, run it through the system and get the
formula. They can even put it in a spray can for you, at least they used to.

I find the original Wilesco grey(s) extremely hard to match, with the standard spraycans available over here, if a perfect match is a must.

The base-colour can be matched relatively good by eye, at least when we´re talking the later years without purple added.

But hitting the sweet spot with the right amount of metallic effect, that´s were the real challenge emerges.
All of the brands i´ve tried out, has either too much or too little "glitter", to match the original.

Next time i get one on the table, that is worth some real attention, i´ll try bringing the engine/base to the local automotive paint shop, and ask them to mix a match for it.
Cheers

all good information fellows ,I really want a spray balm to apply the paint, while at Wal-Mart yesterday I saw several & thought....that looks close , I bought it & got home...not even close. looks like I need to carry they huge base in with me to try to get a better match. we have a shop in town that does paint match, but I think in brush on only paint.

Hey Bruce, there are several brands of refillable paint sprayers on the market that you put your paint
into it and pressurize with a hand pump. Some take up to 100psi. You will probably have to practice with
it but it won't break the bank. Be careful, some are not for paint. Get one for paint and it will have
to be thinned down a bit. 1-2-3, drip, drip, drip.

Bruce maybe worth a trip with the base to an auto panel shop those guys are expert at mixing paint to match colours and they'll spray it for you and maybe even bake it.
