Jensen #20 cylinder bolt size
« on: April 16, 2019, 09:34:36 pm »
I am replacing cylinder bolts with stainless steel on my Jen #20. They are 1/4 inch long but what tpi and size? #6-32? They are almost impossible for me to find especially in cheese head or or slot type. I may use button head or socket head screws if I can find the proper size. Is there a #5-32?

Looks like the steam line screws are the same size and thread but 3/4 long.

Thanks for any help.

Tim

#6/32 fits Tim

I´ve purchased a whole box of SS ones in 3/4" length, and then shortens them up as needed.
Besides the steamline and cylinder ends, they also fit the current type square nuts for boiler straps, and the old style sightglass and steamdome on the early riveted boilers.
Cheers

Thank you Jan and Bruce. Now I’m good. Bruce thank you for that awesome offer to send me a few, but I just ordered a package. Now I’m hoping a hardware store will have 3/4 inch slotted. I still wonder if Allen head caps would look cool.

I actually think Allen head ( SS or nickel) would be very cool &  industrial looking,  IMHO

There are some engines that Allen-head fasteners do look "right" on, but most engines with any age to their appearance would make Allen-heads look too anachronistic, or actually the reverse, futuristic. I think a Jensen #20 could easily wear the proper Allen-head fasteners with propriety and aplomb.

Just bought a box myself...those are perfect for newer Jensen's which ship with zinc plated steel...a bad choice around water.

Also good if original, nickel plated brass screws have been chewed up over time...might just replace them on my Jensen 51R for a perfect look.

For $7.75 USD delivered, I received 50 perfect Fillister head screws from the source Bruce mentioned.  You could not find a better matching screw for Jensen cylinder heads etc.
