Loctite cylinder covers.
« on: December 31, 2022, 09:57:38 am »
Happy new years all!

I've been looking to build my first double acting steam engine. I'd like to build an oscillator and was thinking to loctite the cylinder covers on. I'm wondering a couple things;

What grade of Loctite?

How much area does it need? I.e. how far should my covers go into the cylinder to get enough bonding area?

My thoughts so far are to use Loctite 620, and allow 1/8" - 3mm for gluing surface. Does this seem reasonable?

I've seen some engines here and on the "other" forum that use this method with success, but I can't seem to search out these answers.

Thanks you,

Robin Prince

Hi Robin,

A Happy ad Healthy New Year to you to.  I frequently use a Loctite type adhesive to hold cylinder covers in place, using mostly non Loctite products just high strength versions.  As to depth of shoulder, I use 1/2 mm say 1/16" on up to 1/2" bore after that I use screws.  I think for larger bores a deeper shoulder would be an advantage with an increase of face area as well particularly if you are using higher pressure.  I have never read anything on the subject, I expect Loctite make a a higher temperature high strength product but I have never checked.  So far I haven't had any failures with what I have made and done. Maybe I shouldn't have written that.

Take care Tony.

Thank you Tony,
I beleive it was your posts where I learned loctite could be used in this way. It seems to have served you well.
