Just wondering what color is correct for the cast iron base of an early 50s #5? I was thinking of using 60s Ford dark blue engine paint but wanted to be sure there wasn't something closer to the correct color.
Thanks fellas!
Billy.
Billy, i think that it´ll be all good, with that Ford Dark Blue engine paint.
I don´t think a specific paint was used through all the years anyway, since colour does variate quite a bit inbetween the engines here.
What you should do though, is to ensure that you´re "cheap" when it comes to paint.
If you coat it too genorously, you´ll hide the sandimprints on the casting, and make it a smooth glossy surface, which they never had originally.
Jan is quite right about Tom Jensen's finishes.

And sometimes not even a full coat

Hi Billy, this is what Roger (IndianaRog) suggested to me many years ago & I have been using it with good results since

Thanks for the replies guys. I don't think this one had a full coat from the get go. I merely degreased the crud off the base, which I'd done successfully on a few other clean up/ freshen up projects and the paint was fine, but this one has no paint on surfaces facing one direction and quickly flash rusted. Like it was never turned to paint the other side. Lol.
Haha, sounds about right

Hope to see some pictures of the restoration
Good luck with the Restoration Billyˇ
