Building the PMR #3 Mill Engine

This build was done many years ago but i thought i'd post it up for folks who may not have seen it.

This was the first steam engine i had put together by myself and it still runs as good today as it did back then.

I highly recommend these PMR machined kits which i still think are great value for money and perfect for beginners.

Kit Contents:

Tools of the Trade, not shown are the needle files needed for deburring:

Important not to lose any of the small parts!

Piston assembly:

Eccentric with the pre bent rod:

Crankshaft assembly:

Build is coming along nicely:

Moving on...

Cast iron base and flywheel painted:

Attaching the piston/rod to the crosshead and making sure it is centered.

Cylinder bolted on:

Checking the clearance of the piston:

Final assembly, attaching the crosshead guides:

The completed engine:

Here it is mounted on a wood plinth:

Nice one Philip ... I wholly agree that PM Research make great kits and engines that are highly educational and builder / user friendly. Pretty reasonable pricing as well !!!

Once mine was run in, it ran very happily off a Jensen #60 boiler. All depends on what you will use the engine for.

Yes they are very affordable Daniel, more so than the Stuart machined kits!

Hi Jim,

That is one of Jin's (Microcosm - P30) governors.  I think of it more as an overspeed limiter.....but it is functional, and very nicely made for the price.  I'm going to buy his P60 unit to use on a CMS Beam engine I'm about to start on.

Hi Philip - That was the color set that just "felt" right to me.  I built a PM #7 as well and fell into the same color scheme.  I'm trying to go a different route for my next engine, just haven't figured out what that would be yet.

I must admit i think it is a winning combo and looks good on nearly every engine, i'd be interested to see how you get on with the CMS beam engine kit since i've admired those and will probably get one myself at some point down the line.

I am in the final steps of the “trial build”. I will put together a build thread soon.  Tough to post one of these builds after the excellent CMS engine Jim built (his build inspired me to build my own) but I’ll just provide an interesting contrast with a “talent deficient” effort.
