Question on steam chest location
« on: April 10, 2022, 10:19:26 pm »
I am thinking on building a slide valve type engine. Question is, does the steam chest and valve have to be located on the side of the cylinder or could it be remotely located and piped into the cylinders?

Well the only down fall I can think of having the steam chest away from the cylinder.
Is the steam could cool and condense, even a minute amount would be slightly detrimental.
I'm sure someone has tried it at some point in the last 200 years. If it worked and was an
improvement over the chest being directly connected, then they all would have done it.
Try it, maybe you can improve the mousetrap. ;D

I have one small engine in my collection that has
a separate steam chest - see my pictures. Don't know
exactly how it works because it was not my in my focus till now.
It has a simple working piston and therefore a heavy flywheel.
Depending the inlet tube you choose it runs forward and back.
Anyway a funny little steamer...
