Weeden Bayonet PV with Steam Line Connection & Bayonet Whistle
« on: November 19, 2024, 07:52:09 am »
Not long a go my brother Nate got a number of engines off Facebook Market and one of them was a incomplete Weeded #20 but it was a bit different.  I have two Big Giants that are complete, so I can "share" the lamp base and stack with this #20.  However, it was missing its early whistle, which has a mounting base like the bayonet pressure valve.  I got a reproduction Whistle (unpainted) from David Roenigk, got his contact from Weeden Steam.  Which he is also firefitepc on eBay.  I don't think the reproduction is all that good as when I tighten the screw down, I can still blow air through it (and this is putting it to my lips).  Hopefully putting some Teflon tape in will help or worse case I'll have to seal it up and it will only be for looks.  I have a feeling these bayonet whistles weren't all that great sealing from the factory.  Though they look cool, that's for sure ;-)

Next problem is the arm on the bayonet pressure valve was broken off and missing.  But this bayonet PV is different, as it has the steam line connecting to it.  This is the one I was think we weren't going to find, without a donor. Or we would have to put a standard PV on and put the steam line into the tank, which I really didn't want to do.  As luck has it, I found a reproduction at Classic Tin Toy Co (pre-painted silver).  They have a search, so just enter in Weeden for their parts (or just steam).  It doesn't seem to come with the bar, plug or weight but I have a donor for that (from their photo).

So hopefully I can get all these parts together and this early #20 working again.  It will also need a fair bit of elbow work to get it cleaned up!

Here are some photos.  What I like about this #20 is its flywheel - it is like my brass Giant where you can unscrew the pulley and remove the wheel - nice!  I also didn't realize Weeden painted some wheels red.
