Jensen #55/55GW live steam plant.
this is my most ambitious project for 2019, it features (2) Jensen #55's connected via 1 common boiler with (2) separate throttle controls, one engine powering a cast based windmill & the other a specially modified #15 Jensen generator, the plinth is 3/4"thick 20.5"X16", it weighs 17lbs 11oz (dry) & is 18" tall @ the windmill. starting with the left side we have a Jensen replica windmill with red hand painted fan tips, red ladder & a custom cast iron base with solid oak faux water pump (with 2 roller ball bearings installed on the drive axle) (2) pulleys , one can act as a transmission & drive accessories. the # 1 #55 has came to me as an orphan & has had much work done to it, completely disassembled, bead blasted the base & repainted with Jensen dark blue paint, it runs very well. the boiler is completely brand new & specially custom made for me by Jed P. (gearhead Jed) this boiler is 6.5" long, has 14 rivets on either end, the bushings are brass inserts carefully turned on a lathe & soldered into place, they are thick & designed to last forever , the boiler is thicker than stock Jensen boilers & was built for the use of (1) 660W "hotwatt" immersion rod heater. this boiler also has a special port on front & a nickel plated brass Jensen #50 style boiler drain valve. the boiler has one of my special 0-30 psi or 0-2 bar pressure gauges. the right engine was a "brass tag" engine & was in perfect running condition, it powers a Highly modified Jensen #15 generator, this unit features an on/off switch, the 3" axle was replaced with a 4" axle, has (2) 4 tiered pulleys & has 2 special purpose drive/idler pulleys inserted on the axle just inside the stanchion, the idler pulley has (2) roller ball bearings pressed into the bore & when the generator is to be used for slow turning applications you merely slide the belt from the drive pulley over to the "idler" pully …the belt never needs to leave the drive flywheel. this engine has another belt built in to drive the generator via small flywheel pulley to the large pulley on the generator (while main drive belt is on the idler pulley) there is a special 660W, 6 amp, #55/55GW "modifications by St. Paul Steam" metal tag on the rear of this unit. the cord is heavy gauge 3 wire (w/ground) 16 Ga. vintage cloth covered style with (new) vintage style 3 prong plug.
this plant takes about 5 minutes to come up to steam, the SV releases @ about 25psi, & the run time varies from 20-25 minutes depending on the speed of the engines. it came together very well & is a pleasure to run with many things to keep a steamer busy.
