Nice engine Jim, i do like those Stuart beams and i think that was a smart move fitting the steel base to help with bearing alignment. Reminds me a bit of when Geoff built his own beam from a machined kit many years ago.
Thanks Philip, after watching so many Keith Appleton videos and him talking about how they should be mounted on steel. I got some last week and mounted it.

Yep ...

Mine is lacking the cast in letters spelling STUART on top of the base, but I do believe that it is a Stuart even so.

Daniel I wonder if Stuart ever did them without "Stuart" or the builder decided for some reason to grind the letters off?

Looks like a nice engine, it would be great to see it free of that paint job (if you did it, its looks GREAT :)....if it was someone else...what a crap paint job :) ).

No sign of it being ground off Jim, and as I recall, a few other people did chime in that theirs were sans lettering as well. Possibly the foundry that cast for Stuart put some casting sets out as well, with or without Stuarts knowledge and / or permission ???

This beast was painted everywhere like that when I got it ... probably had much to do with the price which seemed unusually affordable. Has a monster iron coal fired boiler to go with it, that I might be afraid to use, or even hydro test, but it may actually be okay ... or not !?!?

Don't think I do Jim, but obviously you see the firebox on the base with the beam engine. The boiler looks much like it might have been built by an auto mechanic or such like person, as it has valves and fittings that seem to suggest that might have provided the supply chain. It may actually be a sound boiler if it was reworked with proper fittings and if it checked out okay otherwise. But again, this is WAY down the project list, partially because I really don't have a proper place to display it without kicking old favorites out first.

Daniel, that may be the crappiest paint job I have ever seen, but I bet if you stripped it completely it could be a beauty.  Just keep telling yourself the paint job saved you money!!!
