Arnot 'V' four marine steam engine.
« on: May 08, 2020, 03:43:30 am »
Hi,

Yesterday I had a delivery from a friend of a steam engine he would like fixing.  It will be a little time before I can get around to working on it but I did run it on air to see its problems.

Take care stay safe.

Tony.

A lot of moving parts on that one. Good luck with it, I know you have the skills.

Very interesting looking engine, but I'm rather surprised that the pump has no reduction gearing, and is simply cammed right off the crankshaft.

Hi Daniel,

Very interesting looking engine, but I'm rather surprised that the pump has no reduction gearing, and is simply crammed right of the crankshaft.

I agree, but I believe a lot have been made and fitted in boats maybe you close the bypass after the engine is started?

Take care.

Stay safe.

That should pump some power out when running at full steam .
As for the direct drive water pump i think gearing down would be a waste of time as
there  are 4 cylinders to feed so direct drive would probably be about right .

Cheers

What a great engine, I thought these were a bit of a gimmick, but they are definately the real deal.

Perhaps the cam is not very eccentric, so there is not much displacement of the piston involved and thus a low volume per stroke. I have a couple of engines that do have significant gear reduction driving the pump, but those pumps do offer a fair displacement on each stroke.

I am very interested in how you tackle this one?

Looking forward to hearing more Tony.

I believe Bruce made a Quad Cylinder from two PM Research twin cylinders.
