Wilesco D45EL live steam engine (110V)
« on: November 01, 2020, 08:56:36 pm »
I just converted this Wilesco D45 over to a 110V ,300W electrically heated steam plant, it has an immersion rod type heater (1.1/8" long) & a 2000w capacity voltage reducer. this is capable of very long extended runs on low voltage & also has the benefit of looking new for a long time.
for my information, can someone tell me what the difference is between a D45 & a D455 ?

Always wanted one of these too, but haven’t gotten one yet... And electric would be a very nice option to have!

The D45 is the older version of the D455. I don’t know all the differences off hand, but I believe the chimney on the D45 is just an open pipe that you can see right down through, I believe it was changed on the D455 with the added top that yours has to avoid being burnt. I believe the older D45 had a wider/flat burner with no burner slide. And of course older models have metal valves instead of plastic, but not sure when that changeover happened...

Well , I just bought a new D455 from mini-steam since they had them on sale (cheaper than any on Ebay right now) with bigger plans for the new one, other than the stack , I couldn't see any difference.

Yes, I also seen that very attractive price on Ministeam, but the T125 was calling my name!  :D

Jan @classixs may know more differences...

I very nearly bought a T 125 Nick ,but I knew the modifications I wanted to do to it would ruin its originality.  So I passed on it & went for the bargain D455.
