4.5 mm Glass Tubing for Stuart site glass fittings
« on: August 26, 2024, 12:08:17 pm »
4.5 mm is the size that fits in Stuart Fittings and Stuart's offerings are too short for a Jensen 50.
I am working on a very early one that has Stuart fittings. Jensen uses 3/16" glass tubing approximately 4.8 mm to 5 mm and are just a hair too big for the Stuart fittings.

Does anyone have available a piece that is 4.5 mm OD and 3.25" or longer.?

You may be SOoL on that one Gil .... I've checked all my normal Sci-Tech and Industrial outlets and can only find 4mm & 5mm with nothing in between. 11/64ths would be in that ballpark, but I don't see that anywhere either. Perhaps you can find where Stuart gets their tubing to find longer pieces in that diameter.

Perhaps just fitting packing material around the smaller sized tubing to where they are sealed in the oversized fittings?

Or ...... bore out the fittings to where they will accommodate 5mm or 3/16ths O.D. tubing!?!?

I'm pretty sure that you really don't wish to modify the originality in any way ..... but Tom Sr. wouldn't hesitate to do so!

I believe boring the fittings a hair bigger will be my only option. I have also checked industrial, scientific, and lab supply houses with no luck. I also thought of possibly making a longer 5 mm tube red hot to give it a stretch which ought to make it a little thinner. This might involve a learning curve so I'll likely bore out the fittings. Stuart Models doesn't even have it on their website unless I'm looking in the wrong places.
I have a couple new old stock Stuart tube's but they are for the 500 to 504 boilers hence to short for my needs. PM Research has 5 mm and the only thing Ministeam has are Jensen sized for 2.5" & 3" boilers.
