First Run: Weeden #14
« on: October 27, 2024, 08:11:17 am »
Here is the 1st run of the Weeden #14 that came in with that Lot of 10 Weeden items from eBay.  This is 1 of 2 Weeden #14 that came in that lot and it is 100% complete and in darn good shape.  All I did was oil it, put water in, and fired it up!  While the sight glass needs to be pulled to be cleaned, it didn't leak.  I think perhaps the previous owner did do some work on it, which isn't to be unexpected.

I do have a package coming from Frank / weeden.com for new glass and seals.

Here's a video :-)

I ran it more after the video, this engine runs better in reverse than forward.  I am not sure if I have any engine that runs better in reverse!  I was able to take the throttle waaaay down turned over about once per second.  Perhaps this is just how #14's are designed.  That's not to say it runs good forward, it does!

Great little engine, I can see why they were so popular!

Thanks @txlabman aka Charlie but you might change your mind after reading the below LOL

While the sight glass wasn't leaking it had something "gooey" around the glass as it meet up to the brass slip nut.  After getting it all apart, I found inside the slip nuts was string, which isn't the first time I've see this type of a "seal".  I image the "gooey" stuff was some kind of old sealant.  After a little cleaning, I got the sight glass re-installed with new silicone seals.

I also installed one of the governor bands I got from weedensteam.com.  I had to remove the shaft to slip the band on and while I noticed the screw for the shaft seemed a bit loose but I forgot to revisit it.  That was a mistake and brings me to my calamity, I seriously freaked out and was yelling at my stupid self for a good few minutes.  I had just waited overnight to let the piston end cap dry from using some "Permatex 59235 High Temperature Thread Sealant" on its threads and was testing the #14 out. After bringing the engine up to near full speed the shaft's screw worked its way off.  Then in a blink of a eye the lead ball that ties to piston's brass rod flew off across the apartment!

That little lead ball / pivot / shaft combo wasn't damaged - so I dodged a BIG bullet.  On the other side where the screw goes in for the shaft, it was okay too.  So I used Loctitie 609, Medium Strength to reattach the lead ball to the piston's brass rod and used a dap for the shaft's screw.  Hopefully when I fire it up later all will be okay...

Well, for good long minute I thought this #14 was dead.  That is until I pulled the balanced wheel off and discovered that lead ball to the shaft some how got Loctitie on it and it was hardly pivoting on its pin.  That took a bit to get cleaned up and on the 3rd steam up she's back in action!

Got to love self-inflicted wounds to brighten your day LOL

A good ending for sure!

It really looks nice Rich.

There is the Bing version currently on eBay.  I already have one complete in the box with all papers.

I believe that there is a Doll version as well.

And let's not forget the Bing Wolf version (which is electric).  I donated this one to Alan Palmer who did a really nice job restoring it.  This was a four part video series.

Thanks Charlie - it took a bit (a lot) of elbow grease to get it to shine like that!

I saw that Bing, its a bit over 100 right now and I bet it goes for a lot more.  Nate has a rusted up Bing, unless we get very lucky on a donor it likely won't ever run.  Though perhaps it would look nicer after some clean up, I suppose it isn't missing a whole lot of parts?
