Two Older Stuart S50 engines....
« on: September 06, 2021, 09:56:09 pm »
Two Stuart S50 engines, the green one I have had for a long time but it needed a lot of work, the black one I acquired only very recently, and it prompted me to finally get around to attending to the first one. Required a third donor S50, as the original driveshaft on the green one was bent, along with plenty of other issues and parts swaps. Fortunately the black one required nothing more than a good cleaning, it was covered with a layer of dried steam oil residue, which had protected it well (it had clearly seen a lot of run time). Both are now absolutely tight and smooth runners, the black runs on barely a puff of air. I believe that both are older models, having the bronze cylinders and valve chests.

Hi Greg, Nice work and they look great!

The governor looks like one made by John Coleman, a friend who passed away about 10 years ago. He produced them along with some very nice S-50's. He sold the governor on a complete engine and as a ready to install kit. This set-up was his own design. He made them for 5-7 years before passing.

Nice looking engines!  Next in the build queue for me is a Stuart S50 and I'm looking forward to the build.

Thanks to all for the comments.

Gil, good to know the likely source of the governor itself. The engine came from England, but if your friend was offering them for that long, then no doubt some would have ended up there (maybe even more than anywhere else). It is certainly a fine piece of craftsmanship. I have only seen a few S50 models with governors, apparently Stuart does not make them specifically for the S50 today, but maybe they did in years past.

The governor is fully functional, does its job well, but could still use some further fine-tuning at this point.

Hi Dennis, John Coleman also designed the valve body for the governor. It is the extra layer of brass that makes the steam chest look deeper than a standard Stuart S-50. He shipped them worldwide and his ebay handle was steamchest.

Hi Greg, Stuart never provided a governor for the S-50. It is 100% John Coleman's work. John was a very good model engineer

I have a NOS governor from John Coleman that I can get a picture of in a few days…
