You didn't waste the drive.
You came home with a nice engine... even if a bit heavy.
I believe those engine castings were offered by Strelinger, Evray, and others.
Many were sold to blacksmiths who added machine tool work to there skill set and built them for their customers.
Since it came from a blacksmith, he likely built it for himself.
They rarely have the reversing linkage installed.
