Cutting the cast iron skillet was easier than expected. I used a 4-1/2” angle grinder with a thin cutoff wheel for the rough cutting. The final shaping and finishing was done using a file, Dremel tool, and sandpaper.

After the generator project was finished, I learned I had reinvented the wheel by making the base. It turns out that B&P Lamp Supply sells a 6” square cast iron lamp base that is a bit fancier than my skillet base. Plus, Amazon sells the skillet for $26 and the lamp base for $34. Making the base was fun and rewarding, but if I could go back in time, I would spend the extra $8 for the ready-made base.

Plus, B&P sells a larger 12” x 7” rectangular cast iron base that could be used for projects such as a small engine and boiler or a model workshop.
