The Jowitt poppet valve engine in the video has an interesting history and is well traveled. I built it in 1976 on board the ocean going salvage tug "Afon Goch" whilst on salvage station at Stockholm from bar stock borrowed from the engine room stores .We then sailed to Halifax  Nova Scotia towing a cable laying barge. On the homeward passage rescued a merchant ship  North of the Azores in a hurricane almost loosing the tug , engine and me ( but the salvage pay out was very nice !)
The engine was then forgotten about in a suite case in the attic until last year when we were having a clear out. Then I incorporated it  into this diorama. The tug is long gone but a tiny part of it remains in the model at least

should explain that many of us chief engineers at sea would start to build engines then leave them behind for the next guy when we went on leave etc , this is one of the few I completed since I was aboard for 10 months at one stretch( plus being on salvage station waiting for bad weather and some poor sod to get into trouble is the most boring pass time imaginable) and the only one I took home for some reason, probably because we docked at Holyhead which is only 20 miles from my home

That is a great story. I machined my first engine (Stuart #9) aboard a US Navy ship. I don't think many of us built engines aboard ships.
